Hi guys, I recently acquired a 1980 CJ5 and my first fix was the steering box bracket. Already, I'm addicted and in love with this little Jeep!
Quick rundown:
Previous owner said the guy he got it from put in a new AMC 304 V8. He has no idea when/if the tranny or Transfer Case were changed. He thinks the engine has about 20k miles.
My question to you is, how can I identify which Transmission I have? It is a 5 speed and I can make out Borg Warner just barely. From a couple Google searches I found that the T-5 wasn't in the CJ5 until 1982. However if the guy replaced the motor I imagine he put the T-5 in it as well? Are there other options he could've used?
Another thing, the previous owner said he never used 4wd. I find it hard to believe but this guy also rarely drove it around his ranch and isn't very mechanically inclined...so maybe it's true. I don't know what the shift pattern is for my Transfer Case . I imagine it goes, from top down, 4L -> N -> 2H -> 4H but I'm not sure.
I can add photos later today if that helps. Any advice/suggestions are welcome as this is my first Jeep and I'm fairly clueless. Thanks in advance!
