Hood Louvers?

Wow, Gutthans, that looks awesome.

I wouldn't paint stainless steel. I'm not an expert on it but I do know that in construction, it's not something that is done, and there's usually a very good reason behind it.

I'm jumping back and forth between plastic and stainless steel, they don't offer plain steel in the marine offerings. For a minute it's steel all the way, mostly because steel belongs on a CJ jeep. Then the reality of modern day plastics comes into the picture, but when I think of plastic I think of Wrangler era products. But the stainless steel offerings are VERY bright and I'm not all that bright .... er ...... or ...... while there might be some truth in the previous statement a big bright spot on my CJ might seem out of place. Then the realization hits that my grill has one of those stainless steel coverings on it, the thing came that way and I rarely think of it.

Now I'm jumping around like Ratt-Fink between side louvers and top of the hood louvers with a creapy desire to put three on, one on each side and one in the middle. Too much of a good thing. The backwards scoop is mighty attractive, but should wait until a paint job ....... but then again I'm going old school with a black center section and the scoop would get rid of that darned jeep crease in the hood from the windshiled ..... thank you Mr. PO. One thing is becoming obvious, on this subject I'm about as sure footed as a snake on a greased pole.

mstar - I agree with your process list except: I would drill the holes first for the added support of a hood without a great big hole in it. Then cut away. For complete disclosure, this was pointed out in another thread, possibly on another forum, I'm just parroting what apears to be good advice.

Man got to leave something for you to figure out.Common sense would dictate that the holes be drilled first but I know there are people on this board that love to pick apart on details.If it where my jeep I would take that hood off and have soom real louvers punched in it.But it's your hood so have fun ! mike

Ahhhh .... did I touch a sore spot, that wasn't my intension. The post I read was written by a guy that cut the big hole first, when he drilled his holes the metal flexed and made divots. It was his suggestion to drill first then cut. I know I wouldn't have thought about it if he hadn't mentioned it so I though it helpful to pass on the infirmation. I wasn't trying to pick your post apart. Hmmmmm maybe I could consider my post to have been picked apart ....... nope I won't, this thread has been enjoyable and I've learned something from most responses.

This is a good thread. I was noticing the amount of heat on the hood when I was dealing with my radiator and fan last month. I have seen a bunch of local Jeepers use the Poison Spider louvers but i am afraid to even look at their prices. These are great pics.

That's the beauty of CJ's. You don't have to buy expensive accessories. Just put on whatever you want or can find!

BusaDave - I hope you don't mind, but I'm going to copy your louvers almost exactly. You showed these pictures in another thread, which took me to a marine parts page. Beauty! ~$30.00 a set. What is your "hands on" impression of the quality of the louvers you got? Would you use them again?

Mine might be powder coated black or painted. There was a shop I used on some HD parts that was fairly inexpensive, lets hope he's still in business. I still love the looks of the reversed scoop and the side louvers though.

gr8dain - I agree, the best part is this is a job most people can do themselves in a little over a few minutes. This might not actually cool the engine, what I hope it does is help take some of the heat from the headers away from the battery and other under the hood components. I'm not quite so sure about Home Depot though.

They are inexpensive and very good quality. I would surely use them again. I mounted them just alongside the exhaust manifold so water isn't a problem.

Along side the exhaust manifold, that is exactly my thinking. Mine are even hotter with the headers the PO installed. It can't hurt to vent heat like that as quickly as possible.
