Hood Louvers?

Hood Louvers?

these look good, just wonder what the sheet metal would do when a hole this big is removed.

There's a fairly solid edge right there, I imagine it would be fairly stable long enough to attach the louvers and with the louvers in place it's should be fairly strong.

I have become gun shy of Ebay, besides the fact that other sites have the same product for less money.

You'll be fine-;)
It's in a low-load/stress area.

No problem at all as LG pointed out. The formed edge ridge is beneath that and the hole area is under no stress...What I discovered that made me use that particular spot was the low-pressure suction generated by the side wind vacuum. The top of the hood generally is a higher pressure area...the side actually 'pulls' air out because at speed the wind envelope causes a pressure drop right in front of the door. Air shoots out of the side into the pressure drop and gets sucked along the vehicle...

The more I think about adding the louvers the more convinced I am that there will be more in the future. These will go pretty much as BuseDave has them. A couple additional louvers, probably a 2 louver set will go in the fenders just below the top surface. Similar to Gutthans' but not the same. My theory is that there is a moving air void under the hood back corners just in front of the firewall. These will help purge the heat in that area.

I could easily go louver crazy and must hold myself back.

Do any of you think there should be a screen or something similar inside the louvers. If so I'd like to use some of that heavy SS screen you see in factory installed vents. Problem, where to find such a critter.

Hedgehog, since those are exit vents, I would think no screen. Whatever kind of :dung: you get under your hood a screen would restrict it.

I was thinking more about leaves and such that might gather there when the jeep is parked. Yeah the junk that will inevitably fly up under the hood would have to find a home as always until it was cleaned out or fell out. Any dust that gathered there would in theory be sucked out with the heat.

I have no screen on mine.
Never seen anydangthing stuck to it from the inside.
Mine is on the top of the hood-About 4-6" from the back of the hood(between the hinges).

LG - I saw your louvers and mine will be a combination of yours and BusaDaves'. I can't remember, are yours square, pointed or arched on top? Who claims to have manufactured them, is the quality of construction decent and would you get them again?

You asked about posting photo's. Most websites don't actually hold the photo's, it's a waste of space for them. They link to a photo holding site like PhotoBucket. You upload your pictures to one of these free sites, then copy/paste a link then at the top of your post you will see a little mountain and moon button. Simply hit that button and paste /copy your link into the previously set-up line. then you will have pictures. A very cool and powerful tool.

At least I think I have, it might be Old Dogs I'm thinking of, I've seen several variations of the theme and liked them all..

Yes-I would buy again.
Well made and nicely powder coated.
Been on my Jeep for many years. No issues.
I used SS bolts/nuts for mounting hardware.

I have been thinking of cutting holes with a hole saw and using a dimple die to stiffen them up and some course mesh screen to keep some of the water and all the fingers out of the holes. Once again I would put them in the flat side of the hood, the vertical surface about a third of the way back. two rows of 1 1/2" holes, staggered.

I have seen these on other rigs. simple, pretty easy except for making the dimple die, no extra parts, fairly expensive and they look good if done well.

Sounds fancy, but cool. On the Marine louver sites they sell round louvers in several different styles. Some of them even close. For a little while the thought of being able to close the louvers appealed to me, kind of like the radiator covers semi's use in very cold weather. Then it occurred to me that I will likely never be driving the CJ at 40 below.

Here are the pictures of the vent on my hood.
Took my wife's help here--:D

Nice, thank you. From what you've written, those louvers are metal. When looking at similar vents I thought they were plastic. Once again, nice.

Once you've done the picture thing it's really easy and opens up a whole new way of communicating effectively.

Nice jeep!

Here's a couple more from the Anza Borrego Desert.
YES-the louver is steel with satin black powder coat.

LG - nice lookin' jeep, like it with the only exception being, "my you have such big doors in that thing". Didn't quite picture you as being a part of the Scrambler Short crowd. .... okay, okay, enough of Michael (hedgehog) being a jerk. :) Nice jeep though.
