I drive a fair amount on the street lately so I'm in a bind. I want lockers, but I don't want craziness while cruising or in snow. Right now it's open. I'm having the 4.56 gears put in soon so I want a solution by then. I want an ox selectable, cannot afford. Should I look into Limited slip or go for lockers?

I would go straight to lockers.. It's more money up front but will keep you from buying lsd's then hating them and having to buy and pay for the of install again.

Agreed. I had selectable lockers in my TJ and it was awesome. The ability to select wether you want to use the front, rear, or both axles for the amount of contol that you need. Plus, when driving on the street you don't have to worry about your axles doing crazy things that you don't want them to.

I agree that selectable lockers are the way to go. If you don't have the money to get them now, get the gears installed, changing the carriers from open to lockers later isn't that big a deal.

Ok, im going ox, but as old dog said, ill have to gear it first then do lockers. Im ordering 5 wheels today, anyone have good things to say about black rock? 15x10 3 3/4 backspace

I'll be finishing the installation on a LOKKA brand rear diff lock today ( AMC20 ). I'll post my results on the installation and performance. Maybe that will help you in some way with your decision.

Yeah, let me know! Where did you get them?

They aren't bad on dry pavement so I wouldn't worry about cruising so much, but if you are talking about driving on the *street* in ice/snow, they can be miserable IMHO.

Living Florida with our daily rain the automatics suck.. Great Ina straight line or if turning from a slow roll or stop but making a turn with speed and they will lock up and bark all through the turn.. Bystanders will look at you like an A-hole thinking your trying to do it on purpose. Tires will wear quicker also.

I have to disagree. I have Detroit Locker in the rear of my Jeep. I have no problem driving in the dry, rain, or snow and ice. The rear is very controllable. The rear is not the problem. It's the front. I also have a ARB Locker in the front axle. Selectable Lockers in the front is the only way to go. I would not have any other locker in the front. If you want to steer on ice. Any other locker, you are looking for problems.

In my neck of the wood we have hills with tight curves, my Detroit in the rear is a pain, it throws you all around as you let off the gas and than get back on the gas, and that's on dry roads. Rain or snow and it's almost impossible to stay on the road. I will go selectable one of these days when money allows. Just my opinion.

Something must be wrong with your Jeep.. How can you say that? I have a Detroit soft locker. I don't have any of these problems.

The only thing wrong is the Detroit (or any full time locker) locks when under power and unlocks when you let off the gas. Just as it is designed to do.
It's the locking and unlocking going down hill around curves that tends to throw the jeep around.
If something is wrong with mine (I've had 2 now) then I know quite a few other jeeps that must have something wrong with theirs too.
They (Detroit's) are strong and work well off road though.

Not to argue, but the LOKKA doesn't do that. It clicks, and gently. What locker are you referring to?

I got really tired of auto lockers in the rear and so I saved up my money and installed an Eaton electric locker and have zero problems on the road. I used to have a TJ with an auto locker in the front, worked great for years and ya never knew it was there while driving.
Got one in the front of my 74 CJ too. :)

I also have a Detroit and this effect was more pronounced when I went from a 2.5L to a 5.7L. Still very manageable though - I'd call more of a quick sway when torque is re-applied. For the record I drive it on the interstate @ 70mph and it doesn't bother me because its pretty predictable.

Hello guys, newbie to the site but not to wheeling. I have a 78 CJ7 with AMC 304 GM Turbo 400 and the QuadraTrac system. I installed Aussie lockers front and rear in mine and have no issues with it at all. I live in the North Ga. mtns, curvy roads lots of hills and in the winter show and ice. No issues. I'm running Nitto Mud Grapplers 35/12.5/15's
