Build Thread Mike's 1986 CJ7 (Mid Year) Rebuild

Build Thread Mike's 1986 CJ7 (Mid Year) Rebuild
I would suggest purchasing a factory service manual, or at least a Chilton/Haynes manual. Feel free to post up to ask questions before working under your CJ.

I've bought those Chilton/Haynes manuals for every car I've owned in the past 30 years. They have come in handy more than a few times. My CJ5 has a complete Dodge truck drivetrain, but I still ordered a manual to help with all the other stuff.

New master cylinder installed (bench bled). Today a brake fluid flush, then new rear wheel cylinders. The old MC lid gasket was installed upside down... not sure how that played into the whole thing. Either way, glad I went with the new master cylinder.

Depending on what I see, I may dismantle, lube, and install new springs. If the shoes are bad, I'll order a new set.

Do you guys always get new drums or sometimes use the old ones with new shoes?

I've never replaced the drums on any of mine. Just the shoes. Guess I never put enough mileage on em to need replacing

Wouldn't hurt to measure them, but typically, as long as the shoes don't wear thru to the steel, you should be ok

Just installed this UWS 36" Footlocker in the rear seat welded-in nuts.

Nominal Dimensions: 36" L x 19-1/4" W x 12" Depth

Made up some 2" spacers so the lid would clear the height of the wheel wells and leave some room to slide objects underneath. The box (not including the lid) is 35 1/4" wide, leaving 3/8" clearance on either side.

Didn't like the "chrome" finish on the diamond plate so scuffed it up with some fine ScotchBrite.

I'd like the same thing but in dimensions that would fit that small area behind the back seat. I'm sure someone makes something to fit it.

Yours looks awesome. Like idea about scuffing the finish. That sucker would reflect like crazy in the sun. It may also get a little hot in the sun so be careful touching it. But it looks great! Much more useful than a back seat too.

After talking to my mechanic (has worked on all of my vehicles for the past 5 years) I decided to have him set the timing and tune the Weber carburetor today.

OMG... what a difference!!!

No pinging, the acceleration is strong and smooth, 'kiss the key' starting hot and cold.

After he was done, he said that it was the best running Jeep he'd ever worked on...

Had him check the brakes for my own piece of mind as well. He said they were fine...

mman that sure is a nice looking Jeep

Thanks...! Yeah, need some place for stuff that is secure.

Mine didn't even look that nice on day 1 back in 84. :) (cover)

Found some paracord and wrapped the steering wheel and grab bar.

Installed new oil pressure sender (gauge now works) and added a gauge at the block.
