I have a 1978 CJ7 with the AMC 304 and Quadractrac/GM Turbo 400 . I have posted several questions as I work on this system since it is not familiar to me.
Recently I changed the Transfer Case chain which seemed straight forward. While the case was apart, I changed the seal on the rear output shaft.
Yesterday I found that the seal was leaking and removed the yoke to find the seal leaking. It looked like I had not set it deep enough and it was getting chewed up from the yoke sitting too close to it.
QUESTION:
I noticed that the output shaft can move in and out about 1", maybe more. I did not take it out or remove the snap ring from the bearing in it. I know it is sliding back and forth in the primary gear within the case, but is this normal? Wondering if i messed something up.
QUESTION:
Any advice on the seal? I had it driven in flush with the case on the last one.
Thank you!
