The linkage for the Weber is a little more complicated but gives alot of points for adjustment. One thing I didnt like was having to break out the metric wrenches. ;) Heres how it looks after the install.

Hey Pete, are all those vacuum hoses sill functional?:confused: Or is that "Engine Compartment Camouflage"?;)

Thanx man. I like the chrome grill on the black. I havent cared for it on others Ive seen.

Yeah, chrome on black is about the only time I like it too.
 
Ok guys , some things Id like to share with the forum. Im really not a AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l kinda guy. Ive had 4 but none ever really got me geared up. On that note I only ever tried to spruce 1 of those up before this one. I hear them refered to as "tractor motors" alot. Many feel that way do to the idle of the stock AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l and the low end torque. The low end torque is fine but the sputtering and missing are caused by 2 factors. The Carter carb and the motorcraft ignition.


After driving the Scrambler to work and back today and my test drives, I feel pretty good about some of the overall improvements the Weber and H.E.I. did. The idle is consistent and doesnt miss a beat. Off the line the Weber is a flat out a huge improvement. I made a few mistakes and Im going to share them with you.

I'll update that tomorrow.
 
Looking good Pete! I've started getting mine cleaned up and ready for paint. The plan is to get it down to bare metal so we'll see how that goes. You probably won't like this, but I'm thinking about saying goodbye to black. I'm paying close attention to your new carb and distributor too. I'm thinking about doing that next.
 
Sorry I havent been updating this thread lately. Work , kid sports commitments and the holiday stuff have started to interfere. If I lived in Florida Id ditch the black myself. Thanx for checking out the thread. :)

On to whats happened since the last update. The Weber has the pick up and start up qualities I wanted. You can feel its a performance carb. The problem my $50 Weber gave me was that under heavy acceleration everything just went flat. I never rebuilt it , just slapped it on. :( Ok lesson learned.

Ive since rebuilt the carb. Its better but still not quite right. Ive been able to take some timing out now and readjusted the idle. Weber is specific on where your supposed to be at from the beginning.


I "assumed" that it was set up properly by the p.o. Another lesson. :) Hopefully you can use my mistakes to help you do it right the first time. I rushed and did it 1/2 assed. Now Im doing it twice. Some parts thrice. :) Im not sure I have the float set up correctly yet. I'll get more involved in that later.
 
One thing that has gone unbelievably right is Ive run across some 60 degree weather in Pa. around Thanksgiving. Earlier in this thread I said Id be Herculining the cab area. I didnt think Id get to it anymore but Im prepped now and ready to lay it down. Im also tired of looking at a red dash. A custom dash is on my list , but for now a color change is in order. I'll post more tomorrow.

After the floors were welded in I decided to use some seam sealer around all the welds. Between the sealer itself and two good coats of Herculiner everything should come out nicely. Heres some pics of the sealer and all the red Ive been having to look at since I got my black Scrambler. :D Ive used masking tape at times before but a little tip , the blue painters tape is so much easier to work with. Sticks fine and removes easily. I'll never use masking tape again.

I really like how the floor turned out. Between the seam sealer and the texture of the Herc you have to take a good look at the floor to see the repairs. Heres the prepped floor and then with the Herc applied. Still have to clean up and rattle can a few things but light is at a premium.

Its rainy and cooler here for the next 2 days. Pics of the dash and such when the weather clears. Over the Thanksgiving holiday all 4 ball joints. Oh Joy. :(
 
Looks good! I'm still debating whether to herc the inside of mine once the welding gets done. My initial thinking was to just paint it the same color as the outside with some kind of clear coat on top. I'm not planning on doing any hauling or anything so I think it may hold up alright.

How much liner did it take to do inside the cab and bed?
 
I just did the floor board and under the seats, that’s the only place I had any rust issue or abrasion problems. It took one of the small cans; I guess a quart to do that. If I may offer a word of advice, do as many light coats as you can rather than one or two heavy ones You will get a much more even coverage. Most of mine came out just right but I had a bit of help from my daughter and she got a bit carried away in a couple of places. It still looks good and the company was worth the slight cosmetic difference.
It isn't any harder to do a good job with this stuff if you have a clue; I did not at the time. And remember when this stuff is on something it is part of something, it is not coming off! This includes your hands and cloths. Wear rubber gloves and don’t forget to use in a well ventilated area, I got a buzz on and I was out side.
If you mask off areas you will need a razor knife to remove the tape, just cut the line you have masked, this stuff is tough as shoe leather.:cool:
 
I grabbed a gallon and a quart "kit" off Ebay for $115. That was the best price I could find at the time. I have a little over 1/2 a quart left. Im saving that for touch up and such when I can spend more time with better daylight. I did the roll bar entire bed and the floor only in the cab area. If I had it to do over I wouldnt have done the rollbar itself. Id atleast grab a quart and do your floors. Paint in that area is gonna have a hard time holding up for a prolonged length of time. That being said you have to use some type of top coat for the Herc also cause it fades to a drab grayish color after awhile.

that is such a killer example of what you can do if you just apply yourself to a project, makes me almost go out and paint some on my jeep. Naw, raw primer is my color.
