Well it looks like things are going to get more serious with this now. The rear frame is going to be a little more difficult than we predicted. I went as far as calling nearby shops to have it repaired. Lowest estimate was $600 plus materials with me buying the crossmember and shackles. The only "pro" I could see to that is I don't have to take the Jeep apart. And after all that money I still have a "repaired " frame. It didn't take much thinking to rule this option out.

Since I refuse to part out this Cj there is only one other option. We now have a full blown frame of resto-mod. It's really the only way I was going to achieve my rust free goal anyway. The only bad thing is this is going to push this build back till Fall. I will start working on the trailer as soon as the Laredo is done though. During this time I'll also be shopping for a frame. While it pushes the project to the back burner longer than expected it should make up for it in the over all quality of the build. :)

Well maybe I should push more projects to the back burner cause it's cooking fast. Just finalized a deal for a Cj frame with the mounts set up for a Yj tub for $300. It does have a repaired spot but obviously mine would too. Just have to find time to pick it up.

Well how the tide has changed. I'm officially blaming Peanut Butter for this. His custom truck build thread got me thinking again. I looked back in my Jeep folder and the last time I thought of doing a truck was 2010. Now with only one kid left in the nest the dream is more realistic. Here's what's floating around in my head right now:

Going over the details with the wife. There will be a truck build. :) The question is how much aluminum will be used in it.

Pete, I looked into those bodies and boxes. There is a lot of prep work to get it into a Jeep. Lots of holes to drill, body mounts to move, and the whole thing needs to be really scuffed good to hold paint - if you paint it. That's why I'm cutting mine apart. It would be a really sweet truck though!:popcorn::popcorn:

:agree:
Alum needs special primer and paint to adhere to it.

I hear you loud and clear. I'd like the cab and the short bed , no paint because I'd polish it. After consulting with Vicki , "Phew" That was quite a negotiation session. It did clear up a lot of my game plan though. I have a little more thinking to do and I'll get post my plan tomorrow.

Got you thinking!............................. Curse you Pete! Now the wheels,(squeaky though they are:D) have begun to turn in my brain, and I can see another project in the making.
We have a 54 3B that is so rusted out, the body is basically beyond restoration. So I decided to make a body from scratch. I got as far as taking what was left of the drivers side off to use as a template, and things went in a different direction, with a different Jeep. That was 3 years ago. Now after looking at your pictures, very cool!, I can see transforming the 3B into a truck since it already has a half cab.

It wasn't me , I swear! So now Peanut Butter has inspired a small fleet of Cj trucks. so we'll have one on each coast and one in the middle of Texas. Nice balance. :chug:

Ok so now for the plan. Like I said earlier there was some tough negotiations at my place last night. Sometimes you have to give to get. Vicki and I have wanted to move for awhile. I had to agree to moving once we get our next tax return. Far enough away but it does limit how much I'll tear into the truck knowing I'll be moving it soon enough.

I will be getting the bed box from Aqualu. I'll probably get the storage tailgate as well and some aluminum fenders from GenRight also. The cab is going to be made from the current tub. I'm going to make it the same dimensions as the Aqualu can in hopes that someday I can replace it with aluminum as well. Wheelbase will be 111 inches. I will either buy another frame and have it stretched or see if the frame builder will use the front half of mine and redo the whole rear section. Probably go with a Ford Ranger bench seat, Scrambler 1/2 top and the AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l , T-176 drivetrain.

I also had to give up on my other pet project as well. The trailer project is being taken to scrap while I'm posting. That one kinda hurt but Vicki brought up some great points once I stopped arguing. I will need somewhere to put the back 1/2 of the tub I'm cutting off the '82. If things stall or I really want to I can use it to make a trailer. Ok so that's not to bad to deal with. The one other thing I didn't like was a bit of a time constraint. Can't start till after vacation. Understandable but awe man cmon .:D

You people with the truck builds are going to get me into trouble... :chug: I had badly wanted to do a build like this when I stumbled across Jeff Scherb's Gaucho some time ago... I nearly had gotten myself over the idea, but here I go spiraling back towards it again. Thanks, Pete and PB!
