I was on my way back from CT to MA with the CJ I had just purchased. A 1976 with a Chevy 350. I was on the highway when the entire CJ shut down. I pulled over to find that the negative terminal of the battery had disconnected on a violent bump. I reconnected the battery, but then the CJ wouldn't start up again. I checked the fuel, it was fine. In the beginning, you could hear the starter motor trying, but after a few attempts all that was left was a "tic tic tic" when the key was turned. Is this most likely to be a bad battery, alternator, or something far more sinister?

Start with a battery recharge, then do a load check on it to see if the battery is still good. From having a weak connection on the negative terminal, the battery will not charge correctly. If it still clicks after that, then the next thing to look at would be the other battery cables and the starter relay.

Great advice, thanks. Where can I locate the relay? Is there a good source of wiring diagrams and other technical information?

Thanks

Check the "Links" section in this forum, Haynes make a good manual for the CJ also. Finding a good wiring schematic is a must, good luck with that. The relay is usually located on the passenger fenderwell, with a Chevy, it might be on the starter.

My battery is at 12.14 VDC and the engine does not start when jumped off of a good battery. So I don't think its the battery or the alternator. Where's the next place to look? How do I know if my starter motor is bad?

I would suggest that you completely remove the battery and put a hot one in. I suspect that the terminal had been off for some time before the motor died and the battery, although showing 12V has no amperage left. the battery is actually a drain on the jumping system.:D

Does not 'start' or does not 'turn over?' One is very different than the other. If it is does 'not turn over' then I suspect a dead cell in the battery or a broken terminal.. Take the battery out of the vehicle you were jumping from, put it in the CJ and see if it turns over.

If it turns over but will not start you have different problems. ;)

No, I was driving when the terminal came lose. The jeep just never started again after that. I see that the filter going into the carb is empty. Please pardon my ignorance, but should that be full even with the engine off? If so, where do I start troubleshooting? And did I do any damage to my engine trying to start it with no fuel?

Does not turn over, I think. Turning the key to start results in a fast click click click and nothing else.

I will try that tomorrow. Thanks.

I guess it's not to loud now :D sorry coundn't help it. Click click is normally a bad batt or cable.

So, are you saying you put a good battery in and now there is nothing when you turn the ignition key to start?

I will never doubt again! Fresh battery, started right up. So now the question is: is it the battery or the alternator
