Just purchased a CJ7 , 82'. Laredo , column auto, driven 1000miles in 15 years and it needs a few things! Just got brakes, hoses, and general tune-up done, but has severe valve cover leak and exhaust manifold leak. I am getting a finned "Jeep" metal cover and was going to buy a replacement exhaust manifold and new gasket sets. I was wondering if a carb rebuild, or weber change out is suggested? Also, I have read a few things about the nutter bypass, but as a 1982, It doesn't look like it needs it? Also, it is missing a ton of emission stuff and vacuum hook-ups, but runs and starts fine. Seems to be underpowered. Could it be the exhaust manifold leak, carb issues? Would a weber and a better air(new 3" exhaust) help? It has a single pcv, but the suggested pcv is a dual set-up, but different manuals say different things. Sorry, lots of questions, but trying to get my head wrapped around this AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l and it is unbelievable the amount of vacuum and emission stuff is on it.

Thanks for any help or links. My guess is it may need a few basics but looking for any tips!

Welcome to the forum, a good thing to do with a recent CJ purchase is to get it running right and fix what the previous owner screwed up. That's why they sold it right? A carb rebuild might be a good bet, that way you know just what is inside it and how it works. I also would suggest a "Team Rush Upgrade" for the distributor, which is a distributor cap from a Ford six, an adapter to make it fit and a rotor. The upgrade also requires a new set of ignition wires. This is a popular upgrade and fairly inexpensive:I-6 'TeamRush Upgrade' (definitive) - JeepForum.com.
There are quite a few things that can affect the performance of the CJ AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l engine. One of them is the combination of the differential gear ratio and the size of tire used. I mention that since I am not sure of what you have and it is a good place to start.

^^^^ :agree: I had an '82 years ago with 2.73 gearing..... that thing wouldn't pull a greasy rag out of a cat's butt goin downhill with a tailwind.... just awful. You're '82 may be suffering from the same ailment.

Shum, I think we need some elaboration on this greasy rag you speak of ;) White grease or old fashioned drum brake grease?

Side note: I have an 83 with 2:73's still, but it has fuel injection which helps some with the rag.

Back in the day that would be wheel bearing grease..... LOL

In this part of Va, we're not real flat - hills, valleys, and mountains. I couldn't climb grades on interstate without down shifting.... around town wasn't too bad. That's the main reason I regeared the one I'm building now to 3.73...... should be a good compromise between highway driving and playing in the dirt.

If you haven't already , pull the tank and flush out all the garbage that has grown and accumulated in there........do the same to all the fuel lines. Start with a fresh filter and fuel...
