New Jeeper, New Knock, Dirty Oil, Need advice
Ctknorr- this sounds eerily similar to my ongoing experience. Full clean oil (AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l rebuilt then sat for 3 yrs which I did not know when I bought it) drove fine and then the knock. I pulled the valve cover/compression tested fine/replaced rod bearings- still knocks but not as bad. Intermittent now.
IMO I should have found a mechanic familiar with this engine and had them diagnose. Looks like I will have to do this anyway and time/money wasted.
Good luck-

Ok so here's my update.

I found a clean used engine with 61k miles on it.

In the process of swapping old for newer. Can't wait to get it all back in.

Found a few other things we didn't know where problems this way too.

New flywheel ring on order.

Thanks for all the input so far!
