Too many old Ford Trucks and now a 1962 CJ5
Howdy all, new to Jeeps, just bought a 62 CJ5 , no engine, has (from my initial research) a T-18 and Dana 20 ..? Has the parking brake on the back of the Transfer Case , haven't checked gearing in axles yet. Yes, I am a "Pickupman" I have a bunch of old Ford trucks, 1963 F250 4x, 1966 F100 and F250, 1977 F150 4x, 1977 F250 4x and a 1978 Bronco. So not new to wrenching or wheeling, just new to the Jeeps, had a 1963 CJ5 for a shirt while about 15+ yrs ago, was all original and kick myself for selling it.

Which brings me here now! Found a 1962 CJ5 , originally had the 4 cyl,, has the T-18 and Dana 20 from my digging around, not sure on the axle gearing, and since I'm a Ford guy, I happen to have a 302 V8, and a 300 inline 6, with BH's taking up space in my shop so I figured the 302 would be a good choice due to the length of the 300.

Not planning on hard core wheeling, mainly puttering around the fire roads and trails around here with a buddy that has a 76 CJ5 , will probably do a Shut-eye run or 3 and maybe a few technical trails but no major crawling. Here's pics from when I got him home and then parked in the shop for now.

I'm sure I'll have plenty of questions as I go!

You found a nice one. Yeah that’s how it all starts. I’ll just do some easy trails, maybe something big trucks can do. Then you realize you want to do some of those narrow trails where you see less people. :chug:

Yessir, the good news is I already know the ones where most don't go, been wheeling up in the high country for 20 yrs or so, it'll be fun doing it in a different rig from my full-size F250.

That CJ looks like a good starting spot.

I like your taste in trucks! Our family has had a bunch of Ford 4x4 pickups/Broncos as well. From a ‘64 F100 “Heavy Half”, a ‘68 short bed, to quite a few ‘73-‘79 gen trucks (1/2, 3/4, 1tn). Also, ‘66, ‘68, ‘69, ‘77 & ‘79 Broncs. We still have a few of em.

If you can work on the Fords, no issue with the Jeep. Your 302 would be a good candidate. Would be nice to see that, instead of the same ol’ small block chevy transplant.

Thanks Krupp! The old Ford's are great looking trucks, I'm also partial to the 67-72 Chevy trucks but my "fleet" is all Fords, well, and a Jeep now!

Yes, I'm not a fan of the sbc transplants, had a friend with one in a 74 CJ I think, hated working on that thing, maybe it's just me, but when you go to a car show, and see some nice looking vehicles, but they all have the sbc in them it gets old, I know, I know, you can gets parts or them at 7-11 or the grocery store lol, but seriously, step out of the cookie cutter easy to do swap, I love seeing old iron with either original engines or ones that are out of the box thinking cool ones. Hopefully I'll be able to get Willy on the road by spring, or maybe this winter for some road test shake downs!

In the gathering info stage and reading up, so glad he has the T-18 !

A 302 would be really nice in there.

Novak and Mountain Off-road probably to start.
