I was chasing the exact same smoking issue you are having and finally replaced my valve seals, which a few were torn. No smoke anymore.

I sure hope that's what it is. I've got the motor back on the stand, and will get to checking that out soon. Before the motor started smoking, I had pulled the plugs to check for how they were looking. 1-5 were great, but #6 was showing signs of oil burning. A couple days later and that's when I noticed the smoking. All plugs black and fouled, engine had steady misfire. Once I get the flywheel fixed up with a new ring gear, after I get new bellhousing, that's when I'll check out what's going on in the head

Thanks LG! Finally an update on this, I just now got the time to get back into this this morning. I've had the engine on the stand since I pulled it back out a couple weeks ago. Just a bit ago, I took off the valve cover. It's a real shame, because I had it sealed on there really good... At any rate, I got it off, and could immediately see that pretty much all of the valve stem seals had ridden up off of their base, sitting pretty much just beneath the keepers. This thing was just vacuuming oil right into the combustion chambers. It seems like it'd be good to have some smaller springs just inside of the main valve springs, something to keep these things held down? I've got some time to think on it, still going to be a little while till I can afford to spend more money on this thing, haha
