I've been reading possibly way too much info on jeeps and mine is just not matching up to what I am reading.

First issue is boxed frame in the rear , I am thinking it should be boxed all the way to the rear? Is this correct, and I also have disc brakes in front which also doesn't match what I've read. As of now I understand that 76 had drum brakes and boxed frame, so.. What's going on.

If this jeep follows my problem scenario as usual, meaning all things are easy except that one issue that seems to kill it, then I am worried that maybe this frame is another year? Does the frame have to stay with the title.

I'm in Texas and they have hard laws concerning emissions test that kills many swaps, meaning u can swap newer stuff in a older car but canot take emmisions away to swap an older motor in a newer vehicle, and I don't want to get too involved with this one if I have trouble getting on the road
Thanx for any help

A 76 CJ frame is not boxed in the rear (c-channel). It also came with drum brakes but disc is a popular upgrade I'm guessing a previous owner performed.

The majority of your frame should be boxed but the rear portion should be open "c" channel like Posi said. Disc brakes came along in 77 I believe. Thats a fairly common swap. Everything from another "76 and up Cj should swap with yours besides the paddle and rotary handle style hard doors. The newer you go the more emmission stuff was added on.

I'm in the same boat as you except maybe for the frame. My '76 CJ5 has the "mostly boxed" frame. Rear section only is open "C" shape. Disc brakes up front were there when I bought it. I still haven't been able to determine what pads to buy when they need replacing. Last time I bought some for a '78. They didn't fit but fifteen minutes with a grinder's cut off wheel and they work just fine. I don't know what to tell you to do except maybe take one of the used up pads to the parts store when you need new ones and see if you can match them up. I didn't do that the first time. Think I'll try a set for a '79 next time.
