73 CJ5 Dana 44 ---so I ordered my 9" and the guy asked me if I wanted a centered pinion. Answered yes. Decided to take a closer look today (I just confirmed it was a Dana 20 Tcase with a centered output before ordering) and Ive noticed that both the engine is offset to the drivers side and the pinion (not the diff) is offset to the pass side by about 3/4".

Anybody know why they did this?

I guess Ill be cutting one angle down a little with the centered pinion 9"

Who knows, the motor mount adapter kit may move the engine to the center anyways.

The yoke on the Dana 20 and Dana 44 should be centered. Sometimes it looks like the pinion on a differential is off-centered but it's not. It may look that way because the differential extends to one side more than the other. When you buy axle shafts for a centered diff Dana 44 one axle is longer than the other. That is not true of the 9 inch ford. The 9 inch is unique because the axle shafts are the same length.
Take a look at these pictures. Here's a Dana 44 differential. Most differentials extend to one side of the ring gear like this:

This next picture is a 9 inch ford differential.
