So if I'm understanding this if the EGR isn't working it could cause your motor to run rich? I have a real hard time getting mine to pass emmisions because its running to rich and never thought about the EGR as being the problem.

On a 6 cyl the exhaust gas is drawn in near the heat riser and from the exhaust crossover passage on an V8.

How would you test your EGR to determine if it is good or bad?

I do two tests.

Without engine running: I attach a vacuum pump to the EGR and pump it up, it should pull up the diaphragm, it should hold without losing vacuum

Engine running: push up on the diaphragm with your finger, the engine should stumble or stall if the egr is working properly.

I once had an occasional stalling problem, when I let off the accelerator at low speed the engine would stall, turned out to be a bit of rust hanging up the diaphragm. Removed the EGR, cleaned, reinstalled, and it fixed the problem.
