My winter project on my CJ7 this year is going to be replacing my oil pump and oil pan on my 304ci. Do you jeep enthusiasts have any recommendations for a type or brand of oil pump? What about the pan? Is there a manufacturer that makes a armored or hardened pan that can take a hit or a beating?

While I have the bottom open, any other advice on replacement or inspections that could/should be performed? Thank you in advance.

I like Melling oil pumps, stock type - no high pressure or high volume pumps unless you're ramping up toward a race engine.

Pans....I'm not a fan of beefed up oil pans. I'd rather damage a stock, easily replaceable stamped sheet metal pan rather than run a risk of damaging the block or shearing pan bolts. If I was going to wheel with the risk of damaging the oil pan, I believe I'd rather fab up some kind of frame mounted skid pan or removable cross brace under the engine.

I run a 3/16" wall 1" square tube from frame rail to frame rail about where my front shocks are with tabs 90 deg to the bar on the outside of frame. Bolt tabs through frame. Then I run a piece of 1/4" plate about 12" wide from there to the stock skid. I had the shop put one bend in the plate ahead of the oil pan sumo providing about 1" of clearance from the plate to the pan. Weld a piece of 1/4" 1" angle iron with both edges down along the plate on each side to stiffen it. I've banged mine hard with no ill effects. Probably have about $50 in it. Here is the only photo I've got right now- ignore the shredded front drive shaft :).
