Part Identification Help

I just became the owner of a 1977 CJ5 that has been sitting up for two years. I am going to use this as a deer lease vehicle in hopes of getting it street legal in a couple of years. No title for it so we will see how that goes.

I am ordering a lot parts (carb Rebuild Kit, Water Pump, Thermostat, Plugs, filters,,,,,) and I am stumped on what a part I see on the jeep is. I have been searching Google pictures of a AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l with this part but can't find it.

What is this?





I am stumped, any help would be appreciated.

Looks like the air injection system for emissions.

Does your jeep have a smog pump?

I don't know, I looks like whatever it was has been disconnected. Can it just be removed?

Ya, that round thing closer to the manifold should be a valve. So you should be able to take the hose off thats hanging there.

I would agree with this suggestion.

Thanks guys, it is at my lease right now. Going to try and get it running between now and season and then bring it home next year and do the rest. After sitting two years I am concerned about bearings and seals. We'll see, I need it up pretty quick the wife is getting on me about acquiring more hill country racing stripes on my dodge each trip out there.

It is the diverter valve that is in line with the air pump. During rapid deceleration it momentary stops air flow and if there is a buildup of pressure the valve act as a “pop off” to relieve the buildup. Toss it in the trash if the pump is gone.
