I assumed the bearings. I had a similiar problem wth a mazda tk5 popping out of fifth although this one did it all the time - not just decelerating. I was able to pick up another tk5 for a couple of hundred bucks. I doubt this one will work out the same.
So, am I going into the Transmission or can it wait a bit? It's more of an annoyance at this point but if it means certian destruction I might as well get it over with.

-1951 Willys Wagon, 4 cylinder, "F" head, little rust, very close to stock
It's time for a rebuild. With a decent pair of Transmission pliers a T-18 isn't difficult to rebuild yourself. I doubt anything horrible will happen if you keep driving the Transmission , but I'd find time to get it done as soon as I could.

My old T-15 did this but popped out of reverse. I assumed just "Old" and worn and most of the above.
BUT now my new SM420 does this exactly as described, pops out of third, especially during deceleration.
Drive perfectly otherwise.
Are there (as most times) other possibilities?

improper clutch adjustment
fluke of nature...

Blocking ring , syncro, motor mounts, Loose / worn detent balls , springs & forks in the shifter , pilot bearing or any other loose issues within the drive train..........try to get a better handle on what's going on.........sometime's just a shock to the drive line while slowing down is all it takes.

You are likely to get a few wild and far fetched reasons fro this but the fact s your Transmission needs to be freshened up. More than likely for different reasons.
M T-15 would pop out of reverse too. There were a couple reasons, first the nylon pad material on the shift forks was warn out, gone and the forks had too much side play. Also the T-15 is a sliding sleeve Transmission with an interesting arrangement of lumps that look a LOT like steel syncro's. The points get battered off or chip off reducing their engagement surfaces.
The T-18 is entirely different and your problem is more than likely plain old wear. Changing the synro's will extend the life of the Transmission , but a total rebuild kit will bring the old girl back to life. A good rebuild kit will have bearings, shims, snap rings and syncro's. Major parts usually aren't needed. but likely can be bought.
Edit: More than likely you are unloading the gears allowing them to move or slide out of gear.

Bran new turn key SM420 from Novak... The T-15 definitely needed a rebuild, and had one, but still happened. Now my bran new SM420 is doing it.
My main point was to say to OP, it may ormay not be a rebuild of the tranny to fix it. As Terry and others mentioned above, there are many possibilities, finding the cause and solution may not be simple...

I’m with Tarry99. All of the above plus clutch miss alignment, incorrect shaft endplay, missing or bad torque stud or the Transmission mount; sure there are more reasons. I had the same problem with a fresh professional rebuild on a 1978 T-150 so I would start at the front a work back before pulling the box.

OPer here. Thanks Everyone. I think I will take the advice to look at the engine mounts (they look awful and I already bought new ones) and the other things mentioned before we pull the tranny.
I like the idea of doing it myself. I've never rebuilt a car tranny but have taken apart and put together a couple of motorcyle transmissions. Not sure what Transmission pliers are but I'll look into it.

Big ol' snap ring pliers made for the type of ring you find in a Transmission , no holes just a flat spot big enough to get a flat nosed plier on.

Not so, there are quite a few CJ7 's with their nice wide square car doors. If your not jumping over a hump to get in your driving a jeep like car. Also AMC put car transmissions in quite a few jeeps, yes even a true Jeep like a CJ5 got an SR4 , a T-4 and a T-5 . All designed to be light duty car transmissions.

I'd like to see a car do the trails I have been on and it will go anywhere your 5 will and I have room for all my stuff. I've had both and will stick with my 7.

I've always believed that to copy or mimic is one of the greater forms of flattery. When the car designers took up the challenge of easily allowing a modest skirt wearing woman access to the Jeepers world they came up with CJ7 , which we all know were the prelude to the Wrangler many women love.
....... Dude I'm playing here, while they are extensively modified from the CJ5 , the CJ7 still had most of the moving parts of the CJ5 , but in a more comfortable package.
