to be more clear: I understand the recommendation to reuse the existing gear because of concerns about aftermarket gear hardness. My question is slightly different. Since my Jeep is 50 years old and I don't know whether this Prestolite distributor or its gear is original, what should I inspect to determine whether the existing gear is actually worth reusing? What wear pattern indicates the gear has been meshing correctly with the cam?
