All,

This weekend I was planning on installing my rear disc kit. I pulled the drums off and removed the nuts holding the axle, tube, and backing plates together. I was under the assumption that it wouldn't take much effort to pull the axles out of the tubes. I have a '76 CJ5 , but the axle is most definitely a Dana 44 . I can't see behind the seal, so I have no clue what the issue is.

Did the D44s have c-clips? If not, what do you think is going on?

I can't install the disc brakes until I get these axles out.

Any insight is appreciated.

No C-clip
They have always popped out for me by tapping the flange with a rubber mallet.
I'm assuming you don't have a slide hammer?
They rent them for no charge at your local parts store.

It's been awhile, but as I recall, there is a pressed on collar (bearing retainer) on the axle shaft. The shaft has to come out with the bearing. It won't slide out of the bearing until the collar is removed, and you have to get the axle out to do that. Kind of looks like you just have a lot of rust holding the bearing in. Give it a good soaking with penetrating oil, and let it sit overnight at least. Then try a slide hammer to pull the axle.

^^^:agree:

I picked up a slide hammer, and it's soaking in PB blaster.

Hopefully I don't destroy the out seal. I'll have to pull the bearings for that, right?

I'm guessing that seal will leak if you try to reuse it.
While out replace the bearing retainer ring, bearing, and seal.
You'll need to notch the bearing retainer with a chisel to enlarge the bore to remove the retainer, bearing, and seal.
Or bring the shaft to a machine shop and have them do it.

My neighbor has a home garage to die for...and he has a long bearing puller and a press. I'm guessing I'll need to replace the bearing race in the axle tube as well.

Appreciate all the insight.

Since the bearing retainer is a pressed on collar, I would replace everything. It's a real hassle to have to split the retainer off if something goes bad.

Yes, race comes with the new bearing.

Ya know, it's threads like this that make me really want to stay away from axle work.

Ok, I'm off my Google game today.

I'm struggling to find part numbers for bearings and retainers. I would like to use Timken.

Any help is appreciated.

You can find it all on Rockauto.

Went to rock auto and got a part number...USA 10042. Did a Google cross-check and it looks like Timken SET10 is the same thing. Anyone out there that did the same thing recently that can remember?

When pull'n an axle like this-Best to get ALL the weight off of the axle housing.
Don't be afraid of use'n a section on chain around the hub, and jerk the shaft out.
ALWAYS replace the seals, when you pull an axle.

Update: A Jeep club member that works at the local AAA shop hooked me up. Found the bearings, etc that I needed at NAPA.

Seals, bearing, retainers are pressed on and ready to go. Heading back home to pull the inner seals and replace those.

I rented a slide hammer to pull the axles out. Came out after a couple light taps.

Appreciate the help!
