1962-CJ6 (4 cylinder) Tranny a T-90 with a splitter and T-case is a DANA 18.
I have the f 134 4 cyclinder in my 62 CJ6 and I am wanting to swap it out with something a little bigger. Motor is going bad. Am I going to need to swap for a new tranny or is the bolt pattern the same for the 4 cyclinder and the 6 cyclinder or even the 8 cyclinder for that matter?
 
Ok. First is you have a short nosed jeep, astrait 6 or v8 is a hard engine to get in there.
second, in 65 jeep started putting a buick 225 cid v6 in those shot jeeps. Finding one can be a direct bolt in with just motor mount swaps
Other than that the best bet is a later year Dauntless Buick 225 V6 with an adapter
Any proje t with a new tcase will mean a new rear axle for that jeep and once you swap the t case you will soon learn of thousands in adapters and driveshafts to be bought.
My advice is either finding the old Buick or a newer one.
 
For my two cents, I would pass on stuffing a V8 in an early CJ of any flavor. This is from the been-there-done-that file. I did it in a CJ2a years ago and then proceeded to blow out the rest of the drive train except for the Spicer 18 Transfer Case one piece at a time and the extra weight of the V8 caused the frame to crack so I had to repair that too. I would look to the Buick 225 or a newer GM V6 as Baja suggested. The T-90 can be adapted to a GM bell housing. Try this: http://www.novak-adapt.com/catalog/kits_cx.htm

I have been unsuccessfull in locating the 225 but have been able to find a few of the straight 6 (AMC 232 i6 and AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l ). Are these impossible to fit in or just harder than the 225? Would I have to do alot of fabricating to make it work? I've heard the straight 6 is a better engine and longer lasting then the v6? Your thoughts?
 
There is one more option, I know it sounds crazy, you could rebuild the 4 banger. A fresh rebuilt motor can't help but be stronger than an old tired one, you may be surprised. A cheried out 62 CJ6 would be well worth the effort and would have enough value in the right circles you could trade up for the horse power of your dreams.

I am a bit of a purest, to be sure, but you have to ask yourself as the owner of a machine that has not only survived for 50 years but still is capable of moving under its own power, " can I re engineer this entire drive train and do better than what I have?". Seems to me they pretty much got it right the first time, it just needs a little TLC.:D
 
the v6 swap is more than just motor mounts FYI......

the reason Jeep went to theV6 was because a strait 6 was to long to fit in there with out compromise.
look for a newer Dauntless Buick 225 V6
 
A second choice to the Buick 225/231 would be a Chevy 4.3. You also have the choice of carb or fuel injection. Also a 4.3 would most likely be easier to find. If your CJ6 is in good shape you would be better off rebuilding the 4 cylinder. A blue printed and balanced 134 would provide you with a very workable drivetrain for alot less pain and suffering of an engine swap.

Not impossible to fit a straight six, in Australia short nose CJ6 were factory sold under the name of combat six they had ford 170 straight sixes in them but in order to do this they had to cut the firewall and box it in the engine finished about were the dash goes
 
Thanks to all. The more I have been thinking about it. I think with a rebuild the 134 might be strong enough to do what I am wanting. I also have a splitter so I can split every gear which gives me a little bit better power control. Anybody have a guess at what the Horsepower should be with the 134?
