Happy Friday! I have looked at 100's of photos and most show the 84-86 CJ7 radiator neck in the center. Mine and a few others I saw are all the way on the drivers side of radioator. I am going to be replacing mine in my build and wasn't sure if the one I removed was aftermarket or if some did have the cap on the drivers side? And any recommendations for a nice oem replica replacement. I will be going back with original AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l with a few upgrades. Thanks

IIRC the D/S offset was OEM for the 6's and center was for the 8's.
I have had a centered in mine, for many yrs.

Mine is in the center. Dont know if its OEM, but it's been there since 88 when Dad first bought it.

Thanks for the replies. I'm still a little confused since that didn't install an V8's in the mid 80's.

If you look on the underside of the hood front cross member you should see 2 indentations. One in the center, one on the drivers side. Both are where half the radiator cap would be. Looks like AMC used what ever style radiator was handy. And or never change the hood design after stopping production of v8's.

Yup!
Also, so there would be no issue if a hood was replaced on a V8 CJ.

Thanks for the replies. I had seen the intentions in the hood cross member. Before disassembly the hood didn't close right and the cap was hitting the hood. It would shut but there would be a 1/2" difference in the drivers side hood to fender gap and the passengers. The same for the hood to grill alignment. The hood seemed good and level, I think it was the front clip out of alignment and the bushing on the main bolt on the bottom rotted away.

While looking at the wiring, again/stile, noticed the grill has the same indentations for clearing the radiator cap.

Don't think you could go wrong with center or drivers side cap. Find a radiator shop that has been around forever and ask them what size and style they would recommend.
