I live in ct. State law is no side pipe exhaust. I just bought a 75 CJ5 with awesome headers and outside the frame side pipe exhaust. I need to move them to the back ... Any suggestions ?
Thanks!

Really depends on how much effort you want to apply, your individual skills, available tools/welding equipment, and budget. The bigger the budget, the less you need of the other stuff. Regardless, you will have to start looking for new, inside the frame rail headers or stock exhaust manifolds and determine how you want to configure your new system - stock replacement system, custom single exhaust pipe or custom duals. I recently built a full length single system for my AMC 304 powered Scrambler using Hedman Elite headers (coated, thick flanges, ball and socket type collector flange) and 2 1/2" and 3" components that dump behind the drivers side rear tire. You won't have the extra room that I had but you can make a large, free flowing full length system work using a muffler mounted sideways above the rear driveshaft. I pieced my system together using pre-bent tube sections (90 and 180 degree bends), a Dynomax merge pipe, and Hedman headers from Summit and a whole lot of cutting, fitting, and welding. Having the body off made it alot easier. Included are some pictures of my exhaust system to help you think about how you are going to configure yours.

A friend of mine changed his from side to rear outlets. He swapped to a round cherry bomb type muffler and had an exhaust shop route the tubes straight down the body and had em turn under the frame where the frame curves up for the rear wheel opening. I dont rember any issues with it.

Big truck nut ... That looks awesome!!! But I am looking for more of what jimbos is saying, just wanted to see of anyone else had done it like that!

:chug: Nice Job! Rod

Back in the day I had a '78 CJ5 with headers and ran the dual exhaust straight out the back. I didn't care for it because as I drove with the top off the exhaust fumes were sucked back into the Jeep. On my current Jeep, I routed the exhaust out behind the rear driver side tire (the same area as BIGTRUCKNUT) and it is much better. I can get out of the Jeep after a ride and not smell like exhaust.

I've got side exhaust on my '85 and have been passed by several State police as well as locals...no issues. Where did you look for this no sidepipe law?

A lot of it might have to do with how loud it is. I know most places have a noise ordinance.

Remember, not loud, but sounds nice to you might drive your neighbors absolutely nuts.

I forget what neighbors are being the closest one is over a mile away. I would ask some of those fine police officers that turn their heads as you go by. Local DMV might could help, maybe.
