I have a 74 CJ5 with a Dana 20 Transfer Case . The speedometer has never worked. Upon inspection, I noticed that the speedo cable bound up and twisted the end that connects to the transfer case.

Some of the speedo cable remains in the gear drive shaft inside the transfer case. It appears that I need to get that broken piece out before I can install the need speed cable.

Looking at the outside of the case, it appears that the drive gear has a retaining nut/collar on it. I tried to get a wrench on the nut/collar/adapter in order to get it out so I could get the drive gear out. But I have not been successful in being able to get something on it.

I need to know what size socket to use in order to take the nut/collar/adapter piece off and what problems I can expect pulling that drive gear out of the transfer case in order to clean out the broken pieces.

Any help and/or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Can you get a needle nose pliers on the broken cable end?

The nut comes out and the gear and shaft wiggle out.

Worst case , pull the tail piece and driveshaft off. Then you can work on it in a vise. :D

73 CJ, thank you for the reply.

I am not able to get needle nose on the broken end. Unfortunately, it broke off about 1/8" or so down inside the spindle.

I figured the nut would come off but I am having a hard time getting a socket on the nut with it installed and will probably have to take the end piece off.

When I remove the end piece, do I have to drain the fluid out of the Transfer Case first?

Once again, thank you for your help.

You might get a dribble pulling the tail but the level should be lower.

It's not as big a deal as it sounds. Five bolts and the drive shaft. Beats standing on your head for two hours. :D
