Hi,

Just purchased a 1966 Jeep CJ5 , with the 225 V-6 engine, that had been sitting up for about 15 years and as you can imagine it needs a lot of tender loving care. I replaced all the worn out steering linkage, changed all the fluids, new carburetor, put in a new wiring harness and replace most of the lights, and now I have it where I can at least drive it a round.

I need your help in locating a speedometer cable drive gear that goes into the Transfer Case . On my Transfer Case the drive gears screws into the Transfer Case , it doesn't have a plate holding it in like some of the others I've seen. Someone before me had remove the gear and replaced it with a plug. I have attached a picture showing the markings on my Transfer Case and also the plug where the speedometer drive cable gear should go, I think. Thanks for any help and guidance you can give me.

The 66 would have a Dana 18 Transfer Case . Your rear axle center section should be offset to the passenger side. It's a good Transfer Case , and you can add an Overdrive to it. It has it's sort comings, but unless you're going full hardcore, it will serve you well.

As you've surmised, the Previous Owner (PO), had, to put it mildly screwed it up...

Anyway, if the threads aren't totally buggered, you should be able to get a replacement in there. Although.. I really wonder what the gear looks like inside the Transfer Case . And the only way to see that is, tear it apart.

:ww: To The forum... Nice to know I'm not the only senior citizen with an old CJ... :chug:

I see your missing the driven gear, but have you removed the plug and looked inside to see if the drive gear is still there?

I'm sure I have one in my D18 parts bin.

Thanks for your reply. I pulled the plug out and took a picture with my phone and you can the gear on the shaft.

This place can certainly get you a new stock grar but they can also help you with different gears if you choose to install larger tires and/or different gearing.
