85' CJ7, straight 6, D300, All I know so far about he transmission is that it is a 5 speed manual. Still trying to learn what everything else is. lol
So thinking of the worst here with the engine on my Jeep that it is likely toast, I will swap it out with the V8, AMC 304 I have in the other Jeep. It was running just over a year ago but the frame is shot on this Jeep.
The muffler system is in great shape with it fortunately.
I was thinking, and maybe I am just being too jumpy about it, but I was thinking after what happened with my last engine just recently that I would send the V8 out to be rebuilt even before I install it.
I am figuring that it is 37 years old anyway. That way I would be starting off with basically a brand new engine?
Thoughts? Over kill? Would I be jumping the gun a bit? Or good idea?

If you are going with the V8 make sure you have enough Transmission to handle the extra power. If you have a T-5 the V8 might or will be too much for it.

I could swap it all out I guess, the engine and the Transmission . It's a 4 speed though and I was hoping to keep the 5 speed.
With the 5 speed though there is a problem with the transfer box in that it is stuck in 4 wheel drive and the lever is ceased as well.

Since it's a AMC 304 with a 4 speed, there is the chance that you not only have a good engine swap but you may have the T-18 Transmission . A good, strong, Transmission with a granny low. Either way, the Transmission that is with the engine would be the way to go to begin with. Just my $.02

Yes-$$$ well spent on a rebuild. :punk:
What's the 4 speed behind the '8'?
NO-That T-5 will NOT last behind that '8'.
Also, look at Moser I piece axles, if you stick with that OEM model 20 rear axle.

Thanks so much guys.
That's what I will do then is swap out everything and get the V8 rebuilt.
Should I do anything with the Transmission while I have it out already?

Jeff

Change ALL fluids.
What do you know about the tranny? If it's as old as the engine. Then a full redo may be a good way to go.
You also want a new clutch and such.
Again I ask-What tranny is this 4 speed??
If you don't know. Post some pictures of the shift pattern and the tranny itself.

To be honest I don't know what kind of Transmission it is.
Here are a couple of pictures of it. Hard to get a picture underneath because it is covered up with the skid plate.
The markings on the shifter are completely worn out. I thought it was a 4 speed as it moves like a standard H but I can't for the life of me find reverse.
I can ask my friend about that.

Thanks again for the constant advice.
Jeff

What year is the Jeep with the V8? Can't find reverse, it's probably a 3 speed either a T-15 or T-150

That second picture is the bellhousing. Not any help.:p
Get under it, take a rag and on the right side(PS)see if you can find any numbers etc.
I agree-Sounds like a 3-speed T-150 now.

That just goes to show you how much I know. Hey I was just happy I know the Transmission is behind the engine. :D
I feel so overwhelmed by it all.

I have never had an opportunity to do this sort of thing before but am glad I am trying now. Use to be I'd have a problem, pop the hood and think, yup the engine is still there, who do I call?
Time to change that.

Thanks again for everyone's help and all my questions. Very appreciated.

None of us that drive CJ's, that don't have some dirt & grease under our fingernails.
Get a ledger and take notes for future reference, as you do your wrench'n.
Keep a log on ALL work done to include PN's and such.

Having you V8 rebuilt now is money well spent. Easier now than on the side of the road. You have a CJ.......be prepared to learn and get dirty or get poor very fast by having everybody else do it. I've never tore a CJ completely apart before, but I'm doing it now and enjoying all that I have learned. Read, Read, Read! You can never do enough reading about you Jeep. There are books (Amazon) and there is a wealth of information on the internet. Find out what you have, ask questions, and always post some pic with your questions. We're like little kids with a comic book sometimes. Look at what others have and are doing to their Jeeps in the build thread. Lots of info there. Finally get ready for some fun with it, that's why you bought it.

Thanks.
Yes I have created a log book and am taking photos of everything I am doing.
Sometimes I'll head out to the barn in the evening and just stare at things trying to figure out how they work, what they are attached to, etc.
I am really enjoying learning about it all. To me it just seems like a big mechano set and I try to follow things fro A-Z.

Still waiting on my manual which is back ordered.

YUP-You done an got the sic-ness for sure.
Welcome to poverty. :poke:
