Build Thread The '80 FrankenJeep frame off reassembly
Hey, now...... we try to stay current. Well, I do at least. Sometimes LOL

Sent..... Just sent.
Hmm..., I thought that that was probably a good "keep em glued" trick so we don't get complacent and just mindlessly turn pages,... well...push page buttons,...aw heck you know what I meant.
As for me I don't have that problem (yet), as I have all the pages to flip thru till I get to the end so I mindlessly push the buttons in unknowing bliss. (scratching head as smileys still don't work.)

Ok - I couldn’t decide on just one reply, so pick whichever you like the best...

I’ll take that as a compliment!!!!

This...

Ok - I've been distracted from the armrests...... haven't forgotten em, I'll get back on em before long.

Did have a strange occurrence today..... when I hooked the wiper assembly up, they wouldn't make a full sweep like they should. Almost like the pivot arm wasn't long enough. Tonight, when turning the wipers on, I went to wide open unintentionally, and after that, they make full sweeps as they should. My " What the heck" moment.

Can't explain it, but I'll take it.

Just about done reading the full thread.
Very informative and a tribute to working yer hiney off to get it on the road.

The wipers not going full sweep would tie my brain in a knot for not knowing WHY?
You know there was something not right and it may still be lurking there for a rainy day!!

Regardless,... love what you did to your Jeep, and have mucho respect for your resolve/perserverence/stubborn stick to it ness.
I'm burning up with desire as I may get mine home this weekend coming.
Beers.

And here I am at the end of another entertaining and useful thread!

Shum8, you did good with the thread, now I suppose that's pretty much it?
Or are you going to post more about the tops you have?

Mine has the hard top on it still (haven't even got it home yet), but the first thing to do to mine is having it inspected after having a good look at it, and if all of that ticks out, I have a spare hard top that I want to cut and make a half cab out of.

I'm sure I'll see lots of things that will need attention and the first thing that will happen is checking out the fluids in the Transmission , axles and Transfer Case .

Anyway, once I get going, I will probably post some pics and roll the dice.
Thanks again for the thread and showing the details of the work you did,
All the best, J.

Thanks for compliment..... it’s just proof that if build thread is granted for someone that tends to ramble, it will go on for ever LOL.

Nah - They can’t get rid of me that easy.... I still have phase two to go (which is everything I wanted to do after the build funds ran out). It just won’t quite as fast. I wanna swap seat, which will probably require riser mods, add a console, tunes, rebuild the full hard doors along with refurbing the hard top, tires, a 360 , driving lights (the aux lights up front are intended for additional backup lights), a CB...... And I figure by this point I’ll be fixing stuff from phase 1.

Besides - Someone’s gotta keep a finger stuck in Gert’s side......

Sent this one from behind a cold barley pop. :chug:

I did do something last night I haven’t done since I started on the Jeep - loaded up 50 rounds of 44 Mag ammo.

Haven’t done much shooting as every spare minute and dime went into the garage. So that leaves me another 350 rounds left to do to take up to the cabin.

You had me at "ammo"...

Finally got around to doing something I’ve been meaning to do for a long time....... and after I found the receipt, I realized just how long........ Lemme see if I can tie this to the CJ....... we have a guys cabin trip set up for the second weekend in Feb., and I’m really stoked to FINALLY be able to take the Jeep!! In getting stuff prepped and ready to go, I drug out an old Ruger Blackhawk that needs some exercise - it hasn’t been outside in years. It’s a hand-me-down from my Dad, and it had seen many years of hard use. Years ago I sent it back to Ruger for a do over, and while they had it, they installed their transfer bar safety kit - lawyer parts to make it more safe for idiots...... I’d always intended to revert it back to original, so I finally did it tonight. The receipt from Ruger was dated Jan 1993........ I obviously don’t like to rush into things.......

Anyways - here it is back like it oughta be with the lawyer parts surgically removed

Holy :dung: you have been holding on to that one a few years definitely time to give some exercise

Very nice... wish I hadn't sold my Ruger .357 detective special. Bought it new in a liquor store in California back in '76. Walked in, bought it and a bottle of bourbon, and walked out with both. Try that today...

Was made in ‘59, Dad bought it new, I had it redone in ‘93, and have shot it on occasion. Just hadn’t gotten around to “unconverting” it till now......

" many years of hard use ". Was your dad some type of Pistolero ?

No, but he and one of his brothers went thru many thousands of rounds. Growing up in a small town offered better shooting opportunities than the more urban areas.

Yeah me too until about 15 years ago when lead turned to gold. That and a navy seal team took over the best range you could imagine for $15 dollars a year membership

Alrighty - spent about an hour yesterday questioning my lack of forethought....... Remember this modification?

Allows greasing the pocket around the wheel bearing, and an exit hole was drilled and tapped in the opposite side to relieve pressure and not blow the seal when greasing. Easy peasy, right? Well, I took great care to make sure the holes were at the very top and bottom - just one of my afflictions. Decided yesterday to go ahead and fill the space with grease, and as luck would have it, the zerk fitting was RIGHT below the wheel cylinder brake line connection...... if I had rotated the fitting like 10 degrees it would have been perfect. But no, I had to have it perfectly centered at the top. Anyone wanting to do this - it works GREAT, but watch the wheel cylinder. I had to remove the wheel and drum, and release the springs to allow room to move the cylinders outward after removing the mounting bolts. No big deal, but a pain.

Dang it I hate it when that happens

I wonder if the later Dana 44 has grease in the wheel bearings.

Could you take a picture of , and explain how you accomplished the pressure relief? You say you drilled and tapped a hole. What did you thread into that hole?

The original plan was to just add the zerk fitting. Hedgehog suggested a relief on the opposite side, so I filed a flat spot, drilled and tapped it for a 10-32 screw, and plugged it with a pan head screw with lock washer.

Once the screw was removed and the grease fitting was in place, pushing new grease in started pushing the old out. May have a couple air pockets, but it’s pretty close to full.

Great idea... thanks for the clarification.

I don't know the thread size of a zirc, could you fix your problem simply by swapping the zirc into the relief position?

I thought about that - but the tbrrafs are larger - don’t really wanna enlarge that hole without being able to remove all the chips. Since this isn’t something I have to do often, I’ll just laugh at myself every time I do
