Build Thread The '80 FrankenJeep frame off reassembly

I called an audible - it’s cloudy here so I’m gettin darked on. It’s ready for phase one of the Niagra test - I’ll do that tomorrow.

Yeah was just looking at the 7 day forecast for up that way and going to be some rain this week looks like. Going to be in the DC area doing some tourist things

With any luck it’ll be hit and miss. Would rather it not just set in. What days will you be cruising thru Va on I81?

I am up near Leesburg VA. Work in DC. Where and when are you going to be around?

Tuesday evening through Saturday evening. Think we are staying in town. I'm just along for the fun. My sister with her 2 teen age grandkids has it all planned out. My main thing I want to see is the Smithsonian Air & Space Museum, but we are going to several other things and places. Then it is on to Orlando and Kennedy Space Center and hopefully 1 or 2 rocket launches. I know one has been delayed :(

Watching “Band of Brothers” on DVD. All the MB’s running around makes me want one. That’ll get me into divorce court LMAO

Have fun. The Smithsonian museums are great. If you can see the Udvar Hazy location of the Air & Space museum, do it. It is right next to Dulles airport. There are some great aircraft there. SR-71, one of the Space Shuttles, the Enola Gay, and many more. Awesome stuff. Have fun. And the Kennedy Space Center is awesome as well. We went last summer. Amazing stuff down there.

Udvar is at the top. Been to KSC several times. Seen a couple of Shuttle launches and also 3 attempts. 1st was in 83 when you could get close before the 51 L disaster launch. I was in a boat. The sound and shockwave was huge, the 30 ft boat was just shaking. If you ever get to see a launch it is incredible. In a couple few years when the new SLS rocket launches that will be spectacular. Night launches are the best.

Alrighty, then - between working and rain, I had time for the secondary water test. Still running water thru the block. Could actually hear it running down to the brain plug. Dropped the oil pan, and it was running down the inside of the block, right behind the water pump. So now I know it’s either the water pump, timing cover, or a gasket.

Pulled the water pump..... This was my first indication something was wrong

Looked at the timing cover....

So now I know I have issues........ The final determination of the autopsy is that the bolt holding the distributor drive gear to the cam backed out, pushed the timing cover into the water pump, and cracked the timing cover.

Ready for removing old gasket...

Have the new water pump, picked up a used OEM cover off Ebay, and still have enough AMC Blue paint to paint the new parts. A few gaskets and should be back up and running.....

Dang dude that’s unusual for sure, I wonder if the impeller moved on the pump shaft

Glad to hear you found the problem! On the bright side, you put the engine together correctly... several times... gotta be an expert at setting those valley pan gaskets in by now...

No, it was definitely the cam bolt..... I knew it had to be something unusual...... nothing normal ever happens to me

I would think that would have made a whole lot of noise looking at the damage to the water pump.
