My throwout bearing started making a squeeling noise today only when the clutch is depressed. It's a 79' with a AMC 304 with 82 thousand miles on it. The rear main seal has been leaking a bit of oil and I guess that washed the grese from the t/o bearing. You think the oil could lube the bearing but i guess not. A few years ago my son-in-law's 2008' Kia started making t/o noise. I told him it should keep working a long time, making more noise over time. A week later it failed taking the p/p with it.

If any here have had this problem please tell me how long you were able to keep going tolerating the noise without it failing?

Sorry, your bearing ain't going to get any better and will likely get MUCH worse fairly quickly. It sounds like time for a new clutch, a flywheel resurface, a new pilot bushing and throw out bearing. Really there is no, not doing the work. A throw out bearing is a sealed bearing, so no amount of oil on the outside will help.

You might be tempted to only replace part of your clutch system. Unfortunately that is a foolish move. Generally if one part is warn out the rest isn't far away and opening up the clutch area is something you only want to do once.

Pay now, or pay allot more later.
It's your choice.
BTW: You may well need to R&R the clutch due to possible pressure plate damage.
RMS leak will not wash out the T/O. Are you sure it's the RMS leak'n, and not the back of the valve covers?

Basically X2 but I have had throw-out bearings fail when the rest of the clutch system still has life but as Hedge said change it all; the work to get to it isn’t worth doing again soon. :chug:

Don't forget the pilot bearing either.

The front seal is leaking a tiny bit also. The rear sometimes leaks out a steady stream of oil then stops. It's needed a quart in a thousand miles of driving. The valve covers were leaking when I got it but I've redone them a while back. I only want the jeep to keep from getting "cabin feaver" in the winter, got a fairly steep driveway and a half mile of untreated road to get to the U.S. highway wich gets treated and even pre-treated. Also have three other cars (two have traction control) a camper van and a motor cycle. We have an ATV that I just made a snow plow for to solve the untreated road and driveway problem.

I don't want to take on the R & R task to make it right, besides the jeep needs some other things done too. I'll sell it, If any one might be intrested call my cell phone (706)897-8667

Sounds like the PCV was never changed since the Jeep was new or not connected at all by the way you say it leaks.

With 82,000 miles on it he might have the original clutch still in place ..... No matter, he wants to sell it, shortly somebody else will be in here asking the very same question.

WOW-$200.00 or so in parts, and your gonna dump it.
Carry on,

I bet it's more the labor costs that makes him quit on the jeep.

Profile says he's in north Georgia somewhere. I'm on the west coast of middle Georgia. Think I'll give him a call tomorrow morning and see if he'll let me come up and look the thing over with him. Might be able to help him out with the parts installation if he's motivated to keep it.

If he insists on getting rid of it, I'll take some photos and jot down some details and see if he'll list it on here in the classifieds so y'all might get first stab at it.

Buzzard, if you get back on here and read this, expect a call tomorrow from an unknown phone number from the 706 area code tomorrow!

In a moment of weakness I said that I was jumping ship. Well, forget about that, and also don't pay any mind to that "I'll sell it" statement. It's just that bearing started making noise just when I was getting attached to this darn thing. I've not driven it since because I was thinking about my options, and lord knows I got others to drive. I have owned 67 cars or trucks in 67 years, once I had ten at the same time.

Any way, I am capable and willing to fix it myself. Right now it's on injured reserve, I'll use it very little till I can tear into it.

Cool! Glad you decided to hang onto it. I just finished R&R-ing my clutch disc, pressure plate, t/o bearing, and pilot bushing not too long ago. Really didn't think it was that big of an ordeal. To me the toughest part was the balancing act taking it out and then re-installing it with just a rolling floor jack. Managed to do both without dumping it off the jack.

I ain't that far behind you, at 52 y/o and don't have any strength above average for my size. I pulled the tranny and Transfer Case out as one unit with the skid pan / Transmission . support still attached. While it was out, it was an excellent time to clean everything up and replace the oil in the Transfer Case and Transmission . Did it all in a weekend.

Good luck with yours and watch out for the "black ice"! Atlanta was nuts this morning....(worse than usual).

I am thankful that this forum and you guys exist. I have worked on cars all my life. Nothing I've ever owned went to the dealership after the factory warranty expired. If you read my first post I was looking for some one who may have had the same trouble to see if the bearing lasted a while "for them". I have never toasted a t/out bearing, a few rod bearings yes. I have worn out a few clutches, but never the bearing. Since I found this forum I've shotgunned through all the post to learn all I could about jeeps. During that I only remember a few mentions of the t/o/b kinda in passing.

Thanks again.

My time is worthless. Can't even begin to add it into the equation. If I did life would only be about money ....... there's got to be something more.
