Looking to tow bar 1969 CJ5 with 307 chevy a couple hrs drive. Whats the best possible way to do this. Been told to detach the drive shaft in the rear. Does this sound like the best idea?

Yes, I would pull the rear driveshaft (or disconnect it from the rear axle, secure the u joints, and driveshaft). Also, a good rule of thumb is don't flat tow it faster than you would drive it.

What are you towing with?

:agree:

I have flat-towed my '7' all over the western USA.
Make sure your tow vehicle has enough brakes to stop a 4K lb 'trailer'.

I've flat towed mine a few times I've never disconnected the rear drive shaft (safer to do that though) I've always just neutral dropped the tranny and Transfer Case if I was going to haul it a long ways I would remove the drive shaft completely no sense risking it falling or losing a cap. Also make sure ur tow rig is big enough and up for the task at hand. I towed mine with a Ford ranger once and all I have to say is I'm glad I was only towing it 5 Miles and no more than 15 MPH.

You pull the DS so you don't fry the t'case rear output bearing because of oil starvation.
PLZ read the factory recommendations for flat towing.

I wouldn't link Tcase output would be an issue with the OP if he's still has the D18. I've never actually pulled my driveshaft to flat tow my Dana 20 , but have only towed max of 75 miles at 55-60 mph. But I plan to start using the tow bar again to get the CJ to beach and will pull the rear shaft for peace of mind. Besides, it only takes 5 minutes.

Disconnect the driveshafts or not, all depends on what running gear you have.
The Dana D18, Dana 20 and Q-TRAC (I haven't towed with a Dana 300 ).
If you own a manual Transmission with a D18 or Dana 20 = Transmission and Transfer Case goes in neutral.
If you have a Q-TRAC without low range = you must remove both driveshafts.
If you own a Q-TRAC with low range = put Transmission in park, shift low range into neutral.

Known history of oil starvation of the rear D/300 t'case out-put shaft bearing.
Just disco the rear DS at the pinion, and hang it up under the body.
Wrap the u-joint caps with some ele tape, and slip an old sock over the u-joint.
