Transfer case question

Hoping you can help me as I am new to jeeps. I have an 83 CJ that I can never get into 4WD. I struggle with the Transfer Case shifter and it doesn't budge. It is hooked up to an automatic Transmission (I think it is the 904)...so anyway I was thinking of taking the Transfer Case out...but quite frankly not sure where to go from there...worse case scenario, if I had to get a new Transfer Case ...which one? I wouldn't mind spending a couple extra bucks to have peace of mind. thanks for any advice,

The Dana 300 is about as good as it gets for the CJ, next to the Atlas. They are known for being hard to shift though. The case can be shifted on the fly into four high and should be 2-3 mph to shift into low range. I would start by looking for worn out linkage parts or anything loose underneath. The twin stick conversion is a bit easier to use. For starters though try a shift into four high.

shifting the t/c with an auto can sometimes be tricky. It should shift from 2wd to 4wd while going slow by just letting off the gas a little to take the strain off the drivetrain. Kinda like shifting a standard without the clutch.
Sometimes though I have to put mine in Neutral while rolling.

Torxhead pretty much hit it on the head....the Dana 300 is a hard shifter primarily because of the linkage design, which is poor to begin with, and when you add age, grime buildup, and wear, they can be very difficult to shift.

My solution to this was the installation of a twin stick....which unwittingly created smooth shifting by eliminating one stick trying to shift two shift rods by way of a shoddy pivot system. Each stick now shifts it's own rod.

No. It's kinda tight working quarters but it can be done.
I got mine from EBay form a company called 4x4 machine, they have worked great.

Google the year of your jeep, look in the manual, take pictures and post them here, go to the Novak site, they have great pictures , compare those to what you took.

Look at the unit, some have it cast in the case.

One of those will get the job done.

As Old Dog said you should have a Dana 300 Transfer Case .
The twin shift levers can be put on without removing the TCase.
