Transmission Type?

I promise I've used the search engine & tried googling this but I can't find the answer. A 1980 CJ7 I just bought with a 6 cylinder engine has a 4 speed standard Transmission . However it is different than my 1980 CJ5 as the one in my CJ5 has reverse down & to the right by 4th. My CJ7 has reverse up & to the left by first. Can someone please tell my which Transmission I have?

I will update my info this weekend. I haven't been able to delve into the new CJ7 much due to work but hopefully that will change in a few days!

[Only in a Jeep CJ]

It is stock and its called an SR4 . It has a curved stick and interchanges directly with the T-4 and T-5 . Used in 80 and 81only and a horrible Transmission . The reverse location is just the start.

Your 5 may have a T-176 /177 if the shifter stick is straight.

Here's an SR4 pic before I installed it.



Look for 3 bolts holding in the shifter, "Ford" on the cover, and "Borg Warner" on the tailhousing.

The stick does angle back toward my driver's seat. I have larger tires on the jeep but it seems much more anemic than my CJ5 so I figured the Transmission was the main difference. The little I have driven it I noticed going from 1st to 2nd was kind of a pain since it wouldn't engage in 2nd gear right away & I'd have to fish for it.

Tire size will make a difference, but so will gear ratios. Have you checked out what those are? Big tires and tall gears will be a slug.

Your ring & pinion ratio will play heavy on sluggishness.
