In my 71 CJ5 how do i tune the double barrel carb

Well I have a AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l straight-six with a double barrel carb and I was gonna try and tune mine up... what do I need to do?

Depends, what kind of two barrel is it? Factory Carter;

A swapped in Weber;

A swapped in Motorcraft 2150;



Or even possiblely a Holley two barrel;



Because all of them are tuned differently.

Elwood, Today I started my jeep just fine and then I drove it for about 30 min. Then I shut it off at a friends house. When I went to start it back up it was having trouble starting and then it smelled flooded. I removed the air filter off of my Weber Carb. I then had a friend try and start it while I manually opened the choke this allowed more air to enter and then the jeep started no problem.

I am wondering if there is a way to adjust the choke on this carb?

First thing you need to find the choke. It should have two electrical tabs on it. One for hot (+12V) and one for return (ground). Make sure that these two have the correct wires connected to them, and make sure you're getting +12V, and have a good ground.

There is a retaining ring around the choke, it's kind of triangle shaped, but it's not. There should be three screws in the retaining ring. Loosen the retaining ring and rotate the choke assembly counterclockwise. Left is lean, right is rich. If this still doesn't help, there's a chance that the spring inside the choke has gone bad and you'll have to replace it.


I am by no means a Weber carb expert, I'm just going off general carb experience. If anyone else has more experience with Weber carbs....
