Picked up a body donor CJ5 and it happens to have a few "upgraded" items in the driveline,,,,

T-176 /Dana 300 with twin stick control
Summit Bros 1 piece axles
gears possibly lower than 3.5 and a locker in the rear

Would any/all/none of the items be worth the time swapping into the runner?

T-150 /Dana 20
Stock axles
3.54 gears and open diff

The body donor is complete so I would have all the necessary trinkets to swap any of the items.

Opinions?

Sounds like a sweet combo I would swap it all

I'm assuming the engine in the "donor" is bad? If the body and driveline are better than what you have, why not swap your engine into the better 5? Sounds like less work ;)

Just saw the other thread that mentions the frame is shot on the door, yeah, swap it all over

Actually the frame is bad on the donor. Both ends where the rear shackles mount, the rear crossmember, one side forward of the rear spring mount to the t case crossmember are badly rotted/gone and that's what we can easily see, who knows if that's all.

You'll love the T-176 /Dana 300 combo.:chug:
Not sure the 3:54 R&P will help much.
What size tires will you run?

The "runner" has 3.54 gears in it and I intend to run no larger than a 30" tire, I removed a 4" lift and put things back to stock height to run smaller tires and be able to get in and out easier.

Ok popped the cover off the rear diff, 41:11 tooth count so 3.73 and it does have the trac lock.

3:73 would work very well up to a 32" tire.
Trac-loc ain't much of a LSD.
Good set up no less, even better with an LSD in the front.

I'll have to check into the front it may have one already, seems who ever built the donor had a clue what they were doing and the ability to do things reasonably right shame their project succumbed to rust but now I have pieces for mine!

Hmmmmm .... How good is the body? It seem odd to have a good body on a Jeep with a rotted out frame. I'm wondering about the probability of extensive body work and the general quality of the workmanship.

The 176/300 combo sounds solid. What kind of axles are you running? No matter what axle shafts you have an AMC20 would not be a good swap from a Dana 44 .

Body is fine I cannot find any problems, it's glass so no rust. I can only assume someone built a mild "off road toy" and then lost interest in the hobby and then it did a lot of sitting which in my part of PA rust will do more harm than if it was driven everyday by a teenager.

Both CJ's have AMC20 's. Donor has 3.73 gears, 1 piece axles, and the trac lok. The runner 3.54, stock axles, and open diff.

I'm not building an off road machine, I have ATV's for that stuff. I'm trying to build an On road DD that is very capable in adverse weather and if the donor has parts that will get me there then I want to swap them, if not I will leave them.

I missed the part where the donor is fiberglass. Therefore there WAS extensive body work. Just not metal body work.

....... Thank you for filling out your jeep information.

Oh I'd bet money the steel body was a mess. I am going to wait till I get the glass body off (hopefully today) to pronounce judgement on the frame of the donor. We will hit the donor frame with a wire wheel and a few hammers once the glass body is off and see if its repairable My son is hoping the frame can be repaired so he can lay claim to the leftovers and have a CJ5 also.

Well the body is off the donor and the boys scraped and wheeled the frame and we found no other areas of concern. Looks like the donor/parts CJ can be repaired, my son has laid claim to it so another CJ5 project in the works.
