So, I want to upgrade my AMC 304 dizzy. I'm trying to decide between doing part of the team rush upgrade, but not including the MSD box (it's a money thing) or going the GM HEI route.

I'd like to get rid of the OEM box on the driver side inner fender well and the associated wiring, but at the same time, sticking with the OEM dizzy and adding the new cap, wiring, etc, would be fairly inexpensive. Plus, the old dizzy is just, well, old. Not many auto parts stores would have much in the way of spare parts, if I needed them quickly.

The HEI is more plug and play, so to speak, and parts should be easy to find at the LAPS. It would involve a new dizzy to begin with and I believe be reasonably priced.

So, based on the above, what are your opinions and what route have you taken or not? Am I missing something obvious?

Thx in advance

I went with an HEI setup. It's been in for 5 years, and the only thing I have ever had to do with it is clean out the mud when the mud pit was a bit deeper than it looked! Simple 2 wire install. I got mine from Skip White, but I don't think they carry the V8 distributors anymore. Here is the same one on eBay: https://www.ebay.com/itm/A-TEAM-AMC-JEEP-CJ5-CJ7-304-360-401-V-8-HEI-DISTRIBUTOR-RED-65K-VOLT-COIL-/262452524358
If you ever intend to go with an EFI that controls timing, this type of distributor won't work.

Thanks for the information. I just came in from removing the alternator from my Cj. The belt was loose and when I went to loosen the belt adjustment bolt, it snapped off. So then, I spent the next couple of hours removing the alt, which should have been a fifteen minute job. Seems there was a build up of corrosion between the steel bolt and the aluminum alt. But, I'm off on a tangent.

While I was working on the alt, I kept looking at that nearly 45 year old dist and thinking, yep, time to move on to something newer.

again thanks for your insight.
