Warn 8274 Winch?

Warn 8274 Winch?
I do have one question though. When I took the fairlead block off the side plate holding the spool on came off. After looking it is fairly obvious that the winch is designed to do that. What I want to know is there any lubrication needed on that side. It appears that there isn't a true bearing on that side, just a plastic sleeve type bearing surface. Am I missing something?
Nope. Spool just runs on that plastic bearing/bushing. You can add a bit of grease to it. Or:

I drilled mine for a zerk fitting, and about once a year put a 'shot' of grease in it.

^^^ Do this. There is a good write up on that site I posted about how to do it. I'm not going to go that far on either one of the 8274's I've got. Same with adding the drain/fill plugs.

FWIW, my CJ5 with the 5.0L Ford doesn't have any cooling issues with the 8274 out front.

Thanks - I know it probably isn't necessary and I haven't had any cooling problems, especially since adding the hood louvers. But consider this how often is it 114* in Canton, MI? Or driven at 11,000 above sea level. Yes, I know those numbers are extreme, but not uncommon here. In reality the extra plate won't make any difference in the long run. I like the look of it and occasionally it's nice to be a little different.

Lubrication and plastic can be a little trick at times. I like the idea of the grease fitting, but worry about a negative reaction with the plastic bushing/bearing.

About that link you posted: OMG that was quite the project with all the welding repairs he did. What impressed me wasn't the welding, it was the finish work cleaning it up. If I didn't know it wasn't factory it would difficult to spot the repair. Beautiful work.

Yeah, what that welder did was pure art. I only wish I had that sort of talent/skill.

And no, it doesn't often get above 100* in Michigan. It get's hot, but thank God, not that hot. Or for that long.

I'm going to use a little synthetic grease on that bushing/bearing. Won't need much. Probably more to keep the steel from rusting than anything else.

Pic of the one I've got mounted on my CJ5 's custom bumper:

The one I'm working on right now, will probably get synthetic rope on it. Mainly for the weight, as I'm mounting it on a portable carrier:

I also thought about going to the larger motor off a 9.5XP, but decided to just clean up and paint the old motor:

I've been thinking about working on my front bumper again doing it much like yours. It would be easy enough to kick the wings back a few degrees and adding some tubing. I've got several pieces of tubing left over from the sport cage modification I did a year ago. The pipe bender would be happy to bend some more pipe.

The best way to get the wires spooled without actually attaching something with some weight to the hook is a long wooden wedge on top of the wire. Have a second person holding the wire taut FAR AWAY from you at the bumper. Don't have your hands on the wire that close to the winch. Person #2 should lean back and hand-under-hand let the cable in while you are on the retract and guiding the cable with the wedge. Don't let the cable slip through your hands as there will eventually be burr that will be tougher than your gloves and you will have bad day.

Hey hack what did you use to paint that aluminum it looks fantastic!

Hedge-Don't have any worries about the grease deal on the Warn. I've been using syn grease on mine since I got the winch in 1977. NO ISSUE...
How's the Warn upgrade going?

You mean the winch motor? Regular Rustoleum primer and semi-gloss black. 2-3 coats.

I really need to get going on it, before I forget how to put it back together....

No the last picture you have up of the teardown, what is that?

I polished the aluminum up as best I could. 1 year later it looks pretty cruddy again.

Edit: I mean the photos on page 1

Hack seems to do things right when he's working on a project. My guess is that those parts are powder coated. A little pricey, but worth it in the long run, especially on the front of a jeep.

Yes, the cases and the spool have been powder coated.

I had a bunch of stuff that needed to be powder coated: 5 steel wagon wheels (for the CJ), two sets of workbench legs, the winch parts, and winch mount. It was a bit more than I was expecting, but everything turned out great. I didn't bother to have the fins on the top case masked off, so they won't have the polished appearance of the OEM case.

The brake parts were taken to a local plating shop for cadmium:

I picked up a set of OEM Warn decals, but I'm going to see if I can get them duplicated (in case anyone wants a set), as Warn no longer sells this type:

Hack-I would gladly take a set of those decals. Let me know where and how much to send in a check from my Nyrobi ck'n account.:D

I've got to get them first (eBay-being shipped now). Then I will need to send them off to 'a guy' to see if he can duplicate them. Might be a problem depending on the material used on the originals. I'll probably order a half dozen or so sets if they aren't crazy expensive.

Sorry for jackin' the thread Hedgehog...

No problem, I accept and appreciate thread drift of this sort. I know that I've learned a thing or two. That's what these forums are all about. This thread isn't about bragging about getting a decent deal on a winch. It's about knowing that there are decent deals out there if you keep looking and know something about what you are looking for.

That is the truth. And be prepared to jump on that deal when it falls in your lap!

Winch update:

Well, if you have one of the standard or modern winch style plate where the winch attaches to the bottom it is not a simple proposition to modify it to fit a front mount winch like an 8274. When I first measured up the H-F plate I have the jog looked like a fairly simple welding project. Today I removed the H-F winch and started ...... OMG this is going to be a major renovation and I really don't know how much of the original plate will be left in the end.

Also a combination of weight and shape makes the 8274 one of the most awkward items I've ever dealt with. In the end it will be worth the effort, but until then this thing is a chore to work with.

Un-spool the cable and remove the motor, it's save a few pounds when you're trying to position the winch. :chug:

:agree:

Doing that, will save your back.

The weight is definitely as factor. The most annoying aspect is the shape of it. Nothing is flat, there is no real bottom weight. Set it down it rolls over, put it on a small furniture roller and it falls off. Set it so you think it's balanced and next thing you know it's on the floor or ground. Luckily I've been working fairly close to the ground so there hasn't been any damage, but there has been some skin loss attempting to cushion the rollovers. It will lay on it's back, even then it seems to want to rotate. Don't get me wrong, these aren't really complaints, more observations for those that might be working with one of these winches.

Today I'm going to try to get to Metal Workers Supply for some plate steel. This is going to be great fun.

Have'n mounted a few 8274's over the years. I have learned they are finger-tip 'nippers'.

I like your attitude. (Tommy Lee Jones in Under Siege). :D

Pulling off the motor and solenoid pack will get a lot of the top weight off, which causes the tipping.
