The breakage also damaged the axle shaft so now I need a stronger axle shaft (or a set). Should I go all out and get a pair of Dana 60s?

:)Dave.........your the best judge of how hard you work your Iron! 60's are a big step in getting them setup in width,axles,brakes & gears.
The Dana 30 has served you pretty will for many years.........with upgraded U-joints and some aftermarket axles..........you should be good to go for many more years...........

Broke again, cash wise not the jeep, bought new rubber 35's Goodyear wrangler mt/r kevlar
 
A day of quiet excitement. The wiring is ~90% done on my engine swap. The DUI ignition was dropped in place, first best guess on everything. So I hit the starter. The engine turned over well, nothing happened for a little while. Tried not to over heat things in the starting system. So the starter saw short bursts. The engine never popped, never stuttered, but suddenly came to life as if it had been running all day. One second turning over, the next a completely smooth running engine. She's not perfect, the float was stuck and after a few seconds fuel flowed out the over flow port. No big deal there, she's been dry for a little while now. However OMG she ran and I can tell the 360 is a better engine than the AMC 304 was. Tomorrow, more fine tuning of the wiring and vacuum hoses.
 
drove it home from work, saw steam. Discovered it needs a new water pump.

I made a very minor mod to my spare tire rack that should really help me when I'm putting my 36 inch spare up there.

I welded on that little arm to hold the spare until I can tighten up the lug nuts.
I made sure it was long enough so I could rotate my spare until the holes lined up with the studs.

:)Went over to my buddies shop yesterday and played around with his new laser burning table , building some new extended front shock mounts............from a Cad drawing to 6 pieces dropping out of a 1/4" plate all of about 15 minutes.........+/-.003.........Got the rest of the day off!

Installed a new water pump and 195 degree thermostat. It's so nice to work on a vehicle that you can actually see the motor.
 
Last night was the first really bad day working on my jeep. I think I might have a bad 360. Tonight I somewhat started over by repairing a bad water pump gasket, tomorrow we go deeper.

What happened between these two posts?? :confused::confused:
 
Between the two posts .... Its posted in other places. ....... Everything was going as planned. Most wiring was done, the vacuum issues were taken care of, the float/needle valve was replaced so the carb. was working properly. All was going as planned. So I had the engine warming up, paint on the headers burned in nicely, the exhaust was clearing up from burning the oil I used to keep things fresh in the cylinders. I discovered a coolant leak in the water pump I just installed, frustrating but no big deal. Suddenly steam started blowing out the oil filler tube, not just a little steam a BUNCH of steam. Essentially, something ain’t right down deep inside that only showed up when the engine was hot. It felt like someone kicked the air right out of my lungs. The really bad thing is when the engine started so strongly I sold my old engine to another jeeper. Now I just might have NOTHING but a bright green lawn ornament.


....... the jury is still out on that one though.
 
Thanks Terry, picking up the new shoes tonight, that fitting was to make sure I knew how to put it together before I took the other side apart but I totally missed that.

Are you using new drums? New shoes sometimes have to be arched ( a process whereby the shoe gets ground on a machine to fit) the inside diameter of the drum so that there is 100% contact between the two. Not many shops do that anymore but check around.
 
Did not plan to as they look really good. As do the shoes but the shoes are contaminated so I had to replace them. I will take a look at how they match up first. So the arching is making the arch of the shoe match the archive of the hub?

I want disks so I was trying to get get by a little cheaper as disk will also involve new MC in addition to everything else. I am guessing that even un-matched shoes/ drums is better then the greased shoes I have now!

:)Troy, Arching the shoes is an old school method of making the shoe surface match or be near the same OD as the ID of the drum............look at it this way.....the shoes are made with a friction material attached at factory at an unknown dimension .....the brake drums can be used or new and even new can be off some. The process is to match the replacement shoes installed outside diameter with the used or new drums inside diameter less the normal running clearance......this assures that you have complete or near complete surface contact between both components.

Have you ever taken used brake shoes off and noticed that they were only worn on the leading and trailing edges of the shoe only? A clear indication that the shoe diameter exceeded the drum diameter when first installed.
Now of course with the advent of power brakes one could push hard enough and get near full contact..........but have you ever driven a non power braked 50's-70's vintage car?......you need all the contact you can get!

Terry, perfect, thanks for the details. They look good laid on top of the old shoe they are exact match on OD and the old ones had even ware. The new ones also match well to the drum, I realize this is with no pressure on them.

The new ones also have almost 2" more material surface than the old ones.
