Pulled the dissy, disassembled and cleaned it, and replaced 21R and 18R springs with Mr. Gasket 925D set. The green and red springs that I took off were HEAVY!

Any of those videos from New England?

Plenty of YouTube vids of violent roll overs that start at low crawl speeds. I fact one of the worst scenarios is a long moderate hill climb and getting a little sideways then a roll down side over side. It's not always speed that has the high impact but rather repeated impacts in the one roll over that lands on a small part of the cage

If this cage received a couple of hits around the B pillar the risk of tearing the welds increase and the dynamic of the cage change drastically

I still would prefer this over stock but and it's a good practical lay out

Cheers :)

When it comes to aftermarket roll cages in various vehicles It must first start with a good foundation .........meaning it has to have direct contact with the frame or suitable outriggers in various locations .....otherwise in the event of any upset be it at speed or otherwise the cage , its strength and effectiveness will already be compromised.

I agree Tarry,

Below the crossbar is 5 pieces for my 6 point frame tie-in (have to cut the middle piece in 2).

Looks like a lot of careful work ........ and unfortunately a bit top heavy and for me the word cage deffinately describes how I'd feel in the thing. .....but be aware, I couldn't cut the front half of the roll bar/cage out of my Jeep fast enough. Hated everything about it. Yours does look pretty and nicely done though. Sorry guy I really do want to love it.

Did you see the stance and wheelbase of that Cj? Top heavy? Nope. What that Cj is being built for , you want a good cage. You made your Cj yours. Let others do the same. Not everyone wants a 2 track Cj.

Good point, it is longer than stock and like as I tried to write it looks like nice work to me. Wish I had the skills. The seating structure looks great. I wasn't really trying to be negative, a lot of steel like that makes me a little clostrophobic. and I'm getting worse in my old age. I am just curious, how much does a roll cage system like that weigh? Some tubing is VERY strong but doesn't weigh much at all.

250 lbs for an average roll cage @ about 100 ft+/- of tubing in a Jeep.........and other than Chrome Moly where you can reduce the wall thickness by say .060 thousands over mild steel and still get the same strength it still adds up weight wise.

Once you been in a Race Car surrounded by the cage and also enclosed within a funny car style cage system around the driver , with a full face helmet on strapped in with a 6 point harness the closeness kinda grows on you......... would not have it any other way!

Enjoy the ride. I've got a '79 Sportster. Fun, but wouldn't want to go too far on it...

Spot on - purchased 100ft, used that up, and added about 5-8ft more to finish. I'd put the weight around 250 as well. Heck, the tires weigh 90lbe each without rims, 450lbs for the wheels, plus the soon to come skid plate and sliders I think I'll be ok. At this point the Jeep is too high for my liking. I'm looking forward to breaking in the new stock wagon springs to lower the height.

Not trying to put to sharp a point on this at all, just conversating, Rolling weight and suspended weight are two different things. I'm stuck in the old days where a Jeep was a 1/4 ton vehicle, most if not all of us are way over that and I'm sure your Jeep is modified to the point where, well where the 1/4 ton number is simply a crazy pipe dream from the past. ...... love the workmanship.

Thanks, I do have a completely stock 79, other then a mild cam all else is stock, springs, rims, tire size, and plastic console. The new project was built for something different, challenging and fun.

Looks good Posi. :notworthy:

I haven't weighed mine for a couple years but it weighed a little over 4500# empty(no tools or stuff like that) with the 33's and cheap steel wheels. I haven't really added much to the jeep but the beadlocks and 35" bias plys will add quit a bit by themselves. So yea a little more than 1/4 ton stuff.

I know this, I weigh ~300 lbs, my hunting partner weighs 225 and 1/4 ton = 500 lbs. Then there's the extra gas, hunting equipement, center console, top, winch, heavy bumper, fender flairs, about 4 different coats of paint, spare. I don't count rolling stock because it isn't suspended weight. ........ guys, I can't speak for you, but I know my Jeep is over weight.

And when she wouldn't start, I pulled the dissy again to find I'd installed the drive gear upside-down, teeth at the bottom. While I had it apart, restoring the gear to correct orientation, I read the Mr. Gasket instructions and some saved Jeephammer posts, and decided to pull one of the Mr. Gasket 925's and replace it with the red spring. I miked the springs... 925 is 0.025, the red spring 0.034 and the green spring 0.038; would expect stiffness proportional. Idles better, and throttle punch a thousand times more responsive.

I think it was the paint that put you over :D

Good to hear she's running good now.
A lot of people don't think to mess with things like that.
My 350 with HEI likes 2 red springs. :D

Thanks OD

Hedgehog ,if you had a stock Jeep you'd have about 750lbs payload available after you and your buddy hopped in, I agree it's the paint :D

Speaking of weight, I set the rear pinion to the Transfer Case and burned in the rear perches, came away with an 18* angle on the D/S.

Wow , Old Dog.........That seems Heavy? 4500 empty seems like allot. We just weighed a built CJ6 103" WB w/V6 T-18 Dana 44 's at both ends, winch , 35's , cage , side bars ,HD bumpers, body protection and 30 gallons of fuel and it weighed 3740.
