I like the Blue 75 CJ5 . Those tires don't look 12.5, but I can see he is into the springs. Oh, and I like that desert sand 78 as well. :)
 
Yeah, Shane's Noisy Cricket is a nice rig - those are q78's.

Put the jeep up for winter. Need to replace my crushed gas tank and put in a real skid. I've got a stock 20g plastic in the basement but not sure if I want to lose the clearance. Looking at these for a skid. http://www.fourxdoctor.com/catalog/gasskid/gasskid.html

I hate to see a Jeep going away for the winter, but then again I hate to see one rust away even more.

The stump .... I have an image in my mind of someone sticking a tire up there on that the stump. You know the three wheels on the ground and one in the air image we see so often.
 
Well, I may have to make a run over there and pose for you then :). And yes, as you know, the winters up here make short work of metal.

Wooly, I bought the same or similar skid for my 77 CJ5 and stayed with the 15 gallon tank. Really no need for a 20 gallon tank in our neck of the woods. I'm running a 17 gallon fuel cell in my 7 now and can run 2 full days of trails on it and and still have a couple gallon leftover, and that's running a 360.

I weighed the original skid and this one is 17 pounds heavier.

I test fitted the skid and found the three forward holes were off a ½ and the two rear outer holes needed to be enlarged. I expected the holes to be correct.

I scrapped off all the shipping stickers and used a small chisel to remove the weld splatter. I also used a wire wheel and cleaning solvent.

The welds looked good for the most part with some surface porosity. I used por-15 patch to seal the welds inside and out.

After more cleaning I decided to use two coats of Rust Encapsulator on the inside.

The outside I used 2 light coats of etching primer and 1 sealing coat before a top coat of gloss black.

Cleaned and painted the tank while it was out.

I restored it using cold galvanizing compound.

I cut a bike tube the length of the tank strap and slid it over to protect the tank from being chaffed by the strap. It should also help guard against rust as well.

Hey thanks for the info Posi. I'm leaning towards to 15 as well - mine is crushed in to about 11 gal now and I always have plenty of gas . Nice shop and nice work .

Just sold my essentially broken T-176 Transmission for $350 on Ebay. :chug: Never thought I would get that much for it. I had a bidding war between two guys from Puerto Rico. Is there a high demand for old American motor parts there?
 
Yeah, there is a guy about 30 mins from me who buys CJ's and CJ parts locally then ships them to Puerto Rico for a profit. He answered an ad I had on CL and was interested in buying the CJ. When I found out who he was I refused to sell it to him.
Anyone has the right to sell whatever they own to whoever they want, just as I have the right not to sell. Selling a complete CJ to be shipped out of the States rubs me the wrong way. Parts on the other hand is different.

Yeah I was initially put off by the fact the buyer was from Puerto Rico. I thought it was either a scam or I was going to have to pay hundreds of dollars in shipping costs, but he paid up front, and I checked with USPS and the'll ship it for $80. Not bad considering the thing weighs 70 pounds.
 
Spent the last 24 hours scraping off with a putty knife hardened greese from a Transmission skid plate/Crossmember I bought from ebay. The PO put in a crossmember which didn't fit the Dana 300 , so he just cut off a massive chunk of the plate to make it work. Looks terrible, ruins the rigidity of the crossmember, and doesn't protect the TC. Should be installing the new crossmember today. :D

The previous owner probably used one meant for the earlier Cj with the Dana 20 . You'll appreciate the difference in the correct skid plate for sure
 
Prepping for a drive out to the Tahuya 4x4 Loop Trail Saturday, I

- changed engine oil,
- filled the fuel tank
- replaced the driver side parking lamp and side marker bubs
and tweaked the carb's mixture

I have a whole list of things Im trying to accomplish before spring. I just got done removing my steering box for a rebuild. What should have been a 1 hour job turned into about 6 hours.

Something I re-learned: The bolt that secures the clamp on the lower steering shaft over the splines needs to come completely out. After banging on it for several minutes completely perplexed by it's lack of movement, I remembered the bolt also acts as a retainer for the bowl cut in the shaft splines. :eek: Remove the bolt :rolleyes:
