Hey Guys! Just got the winch in. Turned out the bolt pattern on the Smittybuilt winch matched perfectly with the Warn Plate. No Drilling Required! Thank God!

The only issue was that i couldn't access the bolt from underneath the mounting plate, so i had to take off the warn plate and the grill guard tube, assemble the plate to the winch, then put the whole thing back on the bumper again.

Didn't take more then two hours for the whole job. I tested it, and it runs perfectly. Cant wait to get stuck on purpose, so i can really put it to the test. :chug:

BTW: I've heard some reviews about the hardware rusting, so I painted everything with a can of Rustoleum. Hopefully it will offer some protection

Looks great! You can also spray it down with fluid film - good for the winch cable as well.

You might want to run all your electrical cables through a section of radiator hose where it goes along the grill and frame to eliminate chafing issues.

:). That a home made coffee stout that's about 2 weeks into bottling but I can't help but try it. Just hit 175 on the butt - probably about another 2-3 hours. Going back to sit on mine :)

Just arrived in Bangor should be at your place in 10 mins. :chug:

I used the CJ to tow my buddy's 4WD Ranger out of Tahuya.

I must have gotten lucky going through a puddle because the water went over his hood and probably hydrolocked his engine.

He tried to start it before checking the air filter. It was soaked. I think we totaled the truck since it spewed lost a fair amount of oil while making some terrible, connecting rod-broken kind of sounds when it tried to idle just out of the puddle.

When the tow truck arrived the driver looked at me side ways and rolled his eyes in disbelief as I gestured toward the Ranger instead of the 35 year old Renegade next to me.

We hooked his tow strap to the CJ's frame. Jeep handled the same on the highway, so I figure I didn't torque the frame too badly; not even scuffed where the tow rope hook attached.

I idled all the way out to the pavement lugging the pickup behind me. He used his ham radio to get help since we had zero cell signal.

Bittersweet day: SR4 in a 1980 Jeep scores one and the 2000 Ranger scores zero, but my buddy's ride is probably going to be parted out if not just discarded.

He held his emotions together until we got to his house. At home, he didn't want to discuss next steps.

We left his pickup at some NAPA auto service center in Belfair, WA and caught a ferry back to West Seattle. They'll call him after a $100 diagnostic. I figure we'll strap it to my Sprinter van next week and drag it home where it'll be parted out or donated to some charity (running or not, so the radio advertisements say).

I love my CJ more than ever right now, even though it's just dumb luck that I didn't submerge my hood like he did.

Lowered my brake pedal, love the result. Moved the brake pedal MC pin about 1" to accommodate the power assist, love the result. Added 6* of wedge shim to the front end. OMG now I have a running driving, stopping CJ, 65 on I-10 no problem, not squirrely at all, almost sporty. This was a very good weekend after many disappointing weekends working on the CJ. Surprisingly enough, All the disappointing weekends were not time wasted. Each part eventually added up to a superior vehicle in the end. .... Well Superior to what it was before.

Thank all of you for your suggestions.

Michael

Now for the hambone soup that has been working on the stove since 12:00......

Top is the modified pedal.

Cool. Did you cut and reworded the bottom taking that lower bend out as well? Did you take the assembly out or just the pedal? Thanks!

Look in "Drivetrain" in the "Straight ........" thread. I went into the detail you are looking for there.

Just to close this out, a connecting rod broke through the block. He's on the prowl for a 2nd or 3rd gen 4runner since he needs to be able to transport really spendy network firewalls/security appliances and potentially white-collar customers through any kind of weather in relative comfort with a modicum of professionalism.

I know it's not my fault, but I feel like I should help make it right. He hasn't even hinted at asking for help, but never-the-less I should start looking for work because if I were working, he wouldn't even have to ask; I'd just help him make it happen. He's that much of friend and my dad taught me right.

Spent the afternoon pressure washing my frame, then painting on POR-15 rust paint. Couldn't get into every nook and cranny, but i think i got most of the frame covered. Only problem is i'm going to have black paint on my hands for the next several days. This stuff doesn't come off easy. :D

This was my christmas present to my CJ5 . Doesn't improve looks or performance, but hopefully it will keep it on the road for another decade or more. :grinjeep:

Filled up the CJ with parts. Was going to give them to Willys Works, but that rascal took time off for Christmas of all things. It will wait until Monday. It's nice to get to the point where parts are leaving the garage rather than filling it up.

I can agree 200% on that! I've still got a couple shelving units in my basement that I'm gradually sorting through to decide what gets sold (or giving away), and what gets pitched.
