What did you do to or with your CJ today?
Cut down a 13/16th inch spark plug socket with Dremel to make a 4-prong upper ball stud split ring seat removal and tensioner for my CJ7 1980.

Add equal thickness shims on both sides till you have .006-.008 B/L on the ring gear(you must use a indicator for the reading). THEN add .004 to each side for the pre-load.
ALWAYS ck with the carrier bearing cap bolts at full torque setting.
You will need to CK the gear pattern with marking grease. The drive side of the gear is most important.
If you don't know how to 'read' a pattern, then please refer to this.

This and all of the posts about Wooly's R&P are really good info. Might need to make a sticky.

I work for the City of Tucson, no cost of living raises in 15 years, can't afford beer anymore.....

Beer should be cheaper at Raul & Teresa's. Last time I was there, decades ago, there was still a dirt floor.

I think I'd stay away from the pitted gears. Pitting is not a good sign with these gears being case hardened.

Nice pictures. They are hard to get with the carrier still in the axle housing.

GHugg - Have never heard of the place you speak of, but that is no surprise since I've never been much of a "go to the bar" type drinking man. I know I was whining a little there about pay, but all in all the City pays me well enough. There just isn't much money left over at the end of the month and the bill just keep getting bigger.

Okay guys - a little more input please. I still weighing this out. Look at these photos carefully, doesn't it look like the valley of the pinion gear teeth is gouged out and doesn't it look like the edge of the ring teeth is deformed a bit? Does any of that matter?

Like I said-I'd run'em. It's up to you......
BTW-Your show'n the 'coast' side of the gears. Not the 'load' side.
GREAT pictures!

I've set up gears on tractors way worst than what you have shown, they ran fine.

What did I do with my CJ today?

I went in the garage and stared at it with equal amounts of disgust and adoration.

Are those gouges at the bottom or the valley between the pinion teeth machining marks?

Wooly

Nope-Those be gouges from the "float'n" ring gear.

So, (I'm still in favor of starting a tech. thread for all this) exactly what does a set of warn out gears look like?

I hate to be a nanny negative here, but to be honest it looks to me like this gear set is done, shot, warn out. If it were me I'd get a set of guaranteed used gears (the ring and pinion come in a matched set, no mixing sets), they are available for >$100, a compete set of bearings and do a complete ring and pinion set-up. Why the bearings? It was likely set up correctly at the factory, that carrier movement came from somewhere, more than likely the bearings.

I don't have any pictures to show you. What I do have is almost 50 years of experience set'n up R&P's to fall back on.
Other than some minor pitting on the coast side of the gears. There's no wear or gouges in the teeth themselves. Teeth are not missing or chip'd.
Is that set perfect? OH heck NO! Would I run'em-YUP;)
YMMV,

Agreed. This needs moved for the sake of the info and the purpose of the original thread... Both are good.

After doing a bunch of household chores I got out to the garage to start on my list planned for tomorrow. So tonight I got a few little things done. I connected the speedo cable to the Transfer Case . Got the clutch linkage attached and hooked up. Cut the pucks for the underside of the body mounts. I had to order the big flat washers, so I will finish those and tighten it down once they come in. Also hooked up all of the hoses to the evap canister. Went to hook up the fuel fill and vent hoses for the 20 gallon tank. Turns out that I need to go get a bigger hose clamp.
