What did you do to or with your CJ today?

Haha. You know it. I had these 31s with the 2.5" springs before the frame swap. But the 1" lift I built into the body mounts seem to make a difference.

I upped the gears to 3.31s. Not sure how fbI will go up to 33s or not but 32s at least. But I have a good amount of tread left. 40k miles on these tires so I am sure new ones will come soon enough though.

What do you think? 32s or 33s?

With the 3.31 ratios 32s. I'd measure them for myself if I were you. Some 33s are actually 32s. Kinda bites cause I bet you enjoyed the little pick me up the 3.31 gave you over the 2.72. You may lose that going up in tire size

Yep. I noticed that my 31s were really 30.5 new. So I am sure the 33s are smaller a bit. But I can wait. Which will allow me to enjoy the pick up obtained from the gear change. I have only driven it to HD and back so far. And have enjoyed it. Once the re-lift is complete, I will start driving it more often. I miss it. Totally different than the JKU.

I would not want to run 33's, w/3:31 R&P.
Your put'n allot of torque load on the tranny and t'case.

It is hard on the clutch also.

Having tires too large for the gears is hard on the clutch? Is that what you are saying? Can you expand on that? I am not very knowledgeable on gearing so I would love to learn.

It just takes a little more slip to get the whole thing moving with taller tires and taller gears... This is only an issue from stop going forward or in reverse. I think the wear is negligible, different drivers get different lives out of clutches anyway.

The problem with 32's is that they're being phased out by a lot of manufacturers so you limit your options on brand/model.

Here's a good site to help you decide...or confuse you even more...

:dung:. I did not know they were phasing out. And thanks for the clutch info. I was thinking something like that. Might have had something to do with why I just had to replace the clutch while doing the frame swap. The old one was slipping badly. Dumb stock 2.73 gears. ;)

Well, I will say that 32's are probably the "right" size for a lot of us, especially perfect for a 2-3" lift. That's what Austin Jeeps puts on most of their refurbs, but they too have been moving to other sizes - perhaps for this reason, don't know.

I know that my Destination MT's on 15x8 rims measure out to 31" on the nose, you might find a shop that would mount something on YOUR rim so you could measure to see what you're getting.

Yes-You have to 'slip' the clutch more to get roll'n.
gr8dain-What tranny do you have?

I heard they are phasing out 32's.. My supplier couldn't get them because their supplier dropped them altogether..

That's correct. Not all brands at this point but many/most.

When it is time, I guess I will just have to see what is out there. Not sure I want to go to 33s but we will see.

I have 31's on my CJ5 and 33's on my yj.. The 31's on my CJ5 are amazing compared to my 33's ..totally different jeep and Setup but I get decent mileage and less road noise with the 31's

Bummed because I noticed my rear brakes dragging a bit and then come to find out I'm leaking at both rear axle seals onto the rear shoes.. Plus Transfer Case output seal and pinion seal.. 4 seals at once? Just my luck haha

Hey, look on the bright side; All that lube flyin' around under there sure oughta cut down on the potential for rust!

I do feel your pain, thought...........

Wasted about half a day attempting to get through installing new rotors, calipers, brake pads and repacking the front bearings.

The "wasted" part is because the parts guy decided he knew more than I did about part numbers and still ordered me the wrong rotors, calipers and brake pads. I even took him a take off part of each to use for comparison. Now I have to take everything back and probably scrounge everything up off of ebay.

Fixin' to start me a brake part thread and see if any of y'all can offer some part numbers I can log in my repair manual, for just such a future occasion.
