What did you do to or with your CJ today?
What was the caster angle before shimming? What degree shims did you use? Still sounds like you've got caster issues.

Embarrassed to say I don't even know that terminology. I will do some digging to find out. I really appreciate the input.
Do your homework, so you have a handle on the terms. Then take the dang thing to a reputable alignment shop, one that knows how to do a straight axle vehicle. See what the 'numbers' are for caster. You need POSITIVE caster, somewhere in the range of 5*-7*, depending on a few other factors.

I'm running 6* shims in my '75 CJ5 .
Same on my 76. It took 6* shims to get the dang thing into the POSITIVE 5*-7* range. I started out with near ZERO - and NEGATIVE caster, and speeds above 30 mph were 'entertaining', to say the least.

Get that Jeep to a alignment shop, and get a printout of what they find. That way we can work with known issues, and stop all this guessing.
I too say, you most likely have castor issues.

What he said.

With just over 1* my CJ would start a tail end wag that would get worse like a handle bar tank slapper on a motorcycle. Before I could get it stopped, I thought the jeep was going to flop over on it's side during a test run on a flat highway. With 6* wedges up to +70 mph the jeep does well. Much above 70 and she gets a little twitchy.

Edit: I took mine to a shop that knows CJ's, they set the toe-in and told me what I should have for a wedge. They sent me home to install them myself.

Gentlemen - If the OP wants help to learn it I would say we have him / her check this out:

Very good thread to help get a grasp on the situation, terms and things to look at.

I did personally take mine to a alignment shop at first too, but after the wheeling I do I usually always need to re-go through all of this to make sure nothing changed ;)

Well as you guys know ,one thing leads to another on these old CJ's.
Had a wheel cylinder leaking and brakes pulling more than I like.
So this is what caused all the parts scattered around garage.
Actually I figured I may as well go through the front axle and be done with it. I bought this Jeep in August and didn't get any history on maint. as the owner was deceased. Appears to have never been apart before but after 45 years it's hard to tell. I think the inner axle seal are the biggest PITA of the whole job. Anyway it will all be squared away and ready for lots of wheel'in.

What an amazing thread. Thank you so much. Seems the more I learn the more I need to know. Yikes.

Does posting here in response to answers to technical questions I asked and requests for pictures in the same thread count? Tonight was a seeking further technical direction night. Haha :p

These are the type of threads that should become 'stickes'! :notworthy::notworthy:

Maybe we could broaden the tech section and organize it a little better? I'm supposed to talk with Cj tonight. I could bring it up.

It's in the technical section with a lot of good info. Sometimes too many stickies makes the category a bit cluttered, but I agree it's a good one.

Here are the tech section threads that are pretty well put together.

CJ Forums - Technical Threads at Jeep-CJ.com

:chug:

Talked it over with Cj and we'll make this easy. Under the technical threads forum Cj will put all the same sub forums we have in the Cj forums section like drivetrain , chassis and body and so on.Then we'll start moving threads there we feel belong there. Once the area is set up I will start a thread that people can put links in that they feel should be in that section. Then Cj or a moderator will move them to the appropriate area. It should turn into a rather nice resource.

That would be AWSOME!!!

I think it is "inexperienced with a short wheel base big tire " driver.
It was aligned the old school way from a fab/jeep shop that I trust.

Sorry - missed this - also your message seems to be escaping my grasp for reason :D

AKA - What you talking 'bout Willis?

I'm headed out to Tahuya this coming Saturday AM. In preparation for this day trip I finally got around to replacing the PO's ancient, petrified fuel lines go to and from the filter. They'd been bothering me for a while now, but I wasn't motivated until today.

The clamps were way over torqued. I'm surprised it never sprung a leak...

I also used my 5/8" garden hose knock the blanket of leaves and sticks off if it. The radio turned on while I was doing this and it won't shut off :)

I disconnected the battery and will see if the problem persists in the AM.

I looked at photos of my CJ today.

All I can do. I don't even take delivery til January, so I'm kind of impatient at the moment. Love reading about other Jeeps though. saving ideas.

Better start saving money. These dang things are worse than boats
