Wow over 4380 posts never thought it would have gone this far

I have gas going to the tbi and the starter is turning, I fear my dui distributor may have torn up my cam gear.

If so, it would be due to missalignment and / or bad bearings in the DUI...

I6 doesn't have the same soft vs hard issues that the AMC v8's do.

What did you find?

:chug:

Found the glass for my hard top lift gate! And had the chance to talk with Willie Worthy, about some tips and pointers on starting a 4x4 club in my area. I would call that a good day!

Sanded, cleaned, and painted the seat risers... PIA

Unfroze the seat sliders...

Painted the visor brackets and fixed a tear in the vinyl... came out pretty good... practicing for the seat tear.

We've been struggling with emissions, tried 3 times now with no success. Was narrowing in with the help of a carb. company but found a bad vacuum leak on the base gasket/phenolic block. Pulled the carb and replaced everything from the carb to the manifold. Didn't really want to do that, but naturally the phenolic block refused to come off the manifold even with very gentle persuasion moving everything a tiny bit at a time ... wiggle ....wiggle .... wiggle ..... SNAP! Darn it! Oh well I had another one on hand for just this occasion.

OH My does it run well now! Idles it down to 500 rpm without a bobble. Amazing. And it seemed to be running well before.

HH-A trick I learned with keeping those plastic risers from gluing themselves to the manifold, is to coat them with anti-seize.;)

Hope all goes well with your SMOG deal.

Out with a cast net after live shrimp for a fishing trip, I hit a rough spot in our Gulfport, MS fine roads, and the left tierod end jumped out of the socket on my 1980 CJ7 . The tire (35in) kinda turned left and dragged for just a second, the was forced back in line. The tierod end jumped back into the hole, and I drove the short distance back home very slowly. I had a spare nut, and it will never do this trick again! I've drilled it and applied safety wire like the USAF does when they want something to keep working the way it was designed.
BETTER TO BE DOWN HERE WANTING TO BE UP THERE THAN TO BE UP THERE WANTING TO BE DOWN HERE!

It is a beautiful day down here in the south for a ride in the jeep with the top off. Pure blue cloudless day

Even with the CJ running very well she failed miserably on one test and passed on the other. While digging for a potential fix I noticed that the vacuum advance was not on the delayed advance port, but getting full vacuum. That could be very bad for emissions. So it was reset to the proper port on the carb. We also noticed that the tube from the charcoal container had some liquid gas in it. Rob at Willys works came up with a solution that was relatively new to him. It's a valve that absolutely prevents liquid fuel from getting to the Charcoal container. So, out with the old funky valves and in with the new arrangement. ......Oh by the way, the vacuum leak under the carb. has been fixed, at least for now.

Finally, the CJ made it through emissions. The odd part was the emissions guy turned up the idle to 1,000rpm's to make it pass. This engine was a fresh rebuild from a junk yard. It appears that the rebuild came with a lumpy cam that makes the CJ sound lumpy which evidently mimics a bad engine miss. Speed it up until it runs smoother and the apparent miss goes away and the CJ passes emissions. I've been making changes and keeping the RPM's down low, a mistake on my part.

Glad it passed!

My jeep now has a new steer box tie rods and front shims added to help with stability. It is so much better - still squirrelly on the road but better!

What was the caster angle before shimming? What degree shims did you use? Still sounds like you've got caster issues.

Embarrassed to say I don't even know that terminology. I will do some digging to find out. I really appreciate the input.

Might seem like a silly question, but what direction did you install the shims .... we are talking about axle/spring perch springs right? If your CJ still has a stock spring under axle set-up and the perches haven't been rotated and welded on, you want the thick side towards the front ... a spring over set-up would be the opposite. I'm running 6* shims in my '75 CJ5 .

Get that Jeep to a alignment shop, and get a printout of what they find. That way we can work with known issues, and stop all this guessing.
I too say, you most likely have castor issues.
