What did you do to or with your CJ today?
Removed the fuel tank on the Jeep today. Trying to track down an intermittent sputtering and dying issue.
I had it narrowed down to a bunch of :dung: in the bottom of the tank or the filter on the sending unit stopped up. I was disappointed to see that neither was the problem. Inside of the tank was surprisingly clean and so was the filter. Kinda got me scratching my head.
I was pretty sure that was the problem because it cleared up when I back flushed the gas line from the pump to tank.
Anyway ordered a new sending unit and will replace it even though I now don't think that was the problem.

Started the tear down in prep for the motor swap

So after 6 years of trying to fix my Howell TBI, I finally did it!!! My CJ5 was dying on me if I went to full throttle in 4th gear. Having exhausted every other possibility, I remembered the fuel line from the pump to the tank was going through the factory steel line. Thinking the steel line may be the problem, I ran rubber hose from the pump directly to the tank. Took it for a test drive and its running perfect now. :D

Better late then never I guess! ;) I never thought three feet of steel line would cause so many problems. It was the same diameter (5/16) at the TBI input port, so I figured it wouldn't restrict the flow rate.

Wonder if the inside of the steel line is gummed up? Are you going to replace the steel or run the rubber line for good?

With that 40-year-old steel line, who knows what nastiness is in there. I think I'm happy with keeping the rubber hose.

I installed a Skyjacker steering stabilizer after work today. Did the full Left and full Right checks and it's clear. Might have to take her to work tomorrow and see how she feels.

Shredding what?

No guitars, Enron paperwork or mudholes this week. Needed to get the brush down to fill the feeders up on the front end.

Hmm, I wonder if that could be my problem of an intermittent stalling? I did notice it was more prone to doing it with a full throttle or going up a hill.
Since I have the gas tank off and a new sending unit on the way I think i'll replace all of the fuel line as well.

After thinking for a few minutes, I figured out how to get the hoist over the lip and into the garage. I used my jack under each of the legs and then the back. Now to let it dry and then tuck it away for a bit.

Took her out for a long drive today, and it's like I'm driving a new CJ. Just keeps going no matter how far I put the pedal down. It's not just 4th gear that's improved. All the gears now have a better throttle response.

As a rule now. If I ever buy another CJ, I'm immediately going to bypass all that gummed-up factory hard line.

Just installed a roll-bar mount for my Hi-Lift jack. Hi-Lift says it's only for JK's but it easily works on my CJ5 . Originally the jack was on my tire carrier, but I'm concerned about all that extra weight hanging on the end. :)

Guess I'm moving that up a little higher on my own list....

How easy is it to take out the jack with the top on?

Took mine out for a nice drive today, even on a couple dirt roads even though the Michigan roads have enough bumps in them, and I could really feel a difference with the new steering stabilizer. Much nicer ride.
I have a new shift boot because the one on there is old and torn and lets in a lot of hot air from under the vehicle but I'm thinking I might wait till Spring to install it. The extra hot air may not be a bad thing in Winter :-)
