I spent all day working on Jeeps.
The day started with my bearing splitter and shop press helping a buddy replace his bearings and synchros for the AX15 in his XJ. We found out that one of the gears had chipped teeth so we stopped and set the parts aside so he can order a replacement.
After that I got to work putting in a captive nut in the frame for my steering box mount. For some reason, maybe because it came with manual steering, there were only two captive nuts, both under the shackle hanger. The third was just a big hole. Oddly enough, the passenger side of the frame has its captive nut that was never used.
So I used a Dremel tool to cut out a small section and welded in a patch piece with a captive nut on it. It was labor intensive but I really do want to have all the strength I can since I'm putting in power steering (with ram assist) for large tires. I have the MORE heavy duty steering box mount and it would look goofy with one bolt not there.
But I'm just about done with all the detail work the frame needed and I'm ready to start the assembly process. Tomorrow I'll see if I can rope my neighbor into helping me flip the frame so I can do the last little bits and at least get the axles under it.
