Spent an 'entertaining' 6+ hours watching a mechanic change the manifold gasket on the CJ7 . I say entertaining, because the shop boss gave me a firm price for parts and labor, and the mechanic says "Yeah, just back out about nine bolts, slide her back, pop out the old gasket and slip in the new one, and bolt her back up." Well, it started out OK cause some of the bolts were loose (part of the original problem), and none of the rest were super tight. Sure enough, after getting the PS pump out of the way, he slid back the manifold and pulled out the old gasket. It was sure enough bad, with about a 3" section about the center blown away. Then the ?fun? began. Now, the guy obviously knew what he was doing, but some days nothing goes right. New gasket in place, one bolt in front, one in back to hold it in place - and the rest of the bolts won't line up. Lift with a pry bar - it slips - and first blood is drawn. Undaunted, he presses on. Another bolt in place, then another, until he's down to the last two. A bigger bar - more finger dings - and they still won't line up. Try from underneath - nope. Aha - a cracked motor mount - put a jack stand under the engine. Nope. More pry bar. Nope. Drops the pry bar on top of the radiator, and the lift lever on the radiator cap breaks off. Damn! Pull some of the bolts already installed, and the manifold will move enough to get those two lined up, but now two more are off. Boss comes by, says we're losing money on this job. Mechanic is a little pissed at that - he hasn't taken a break of any kind, his fingers are bleeding from numerous dings, and he is determined not to let this thing beat him. Well, it took over 6 hours, but he finally got all the bolts in, tightened, and the engine sounds sweet. (I walked down a couple of blocks to the parts store and got a new radiator cap while he was struggling -shxx happens - and I didn't think he needed to be docked for the cost of a new cap after what he'd been through). Bottom line, no exhaust leak, I still have to replace that motor mount, and the boss stood by the original estimate.

Welcome to wrenching 101. LOL
That mechanic deserves a bottle of the good stuff.
Good job boss!

After Kens post i feel weak.

I noticed that my windshield frame securing knobs would loosen up no matter how tight i could get them by hand.
I guess i forgot how old,& fragile the gal can be.
I took a wrench to the knob, - :dung:! - busted.
If they were still available from Jeep they would be 35 bucks each.
Morris here i come again.

I'm going to get my Jeep back! ! !

I am going to pick up my CJ5 today!
Back on July 25th while four wheeling in the mountains over Silverton Colorado I broke my front left leaf spring
391_broken_leaf_spring__small.jpg

I was able to limp my way back down to the town of Silverton and hitch a ride back home (an hour away). Although I wanted to fix my jeep myself I didn't have a trailer to bring it home. I left my CJ at a shop thinking I could just order some springs and let them slap them in. WRONG! I ordered some springs for a CJ5 but they were wrong. I ordered more springs, still wrong. Had to have the springs custom made at Alcam Springs. After shipping one spring to Alcam they were able to tell me the PO swapped in the springs from a Scout 80 when he did a shackle reversal.
After missing some of the best time of the year for jeeping I will be picking up my CJ today and I plan on spending the weekend camping in the mountains. It's already getting cold in the mountains. If I camp at the lower altitudes I just might be able to avoid freezing temperatures.

well its wiring for me today, i sorta slapped the tfi together last weekend to get it running good enough to drive because i was running out of time on sunday so now i get to go back and do it again. plus i'm going to pick up some new maker lenses and dash lights.

Over Memorial Day weekend, I was finally able to bring the front axle home(a free Dana 44 from mid 70's Chevy with the flat top knuckle). So last night I brought the 9 inch back home as well, so everything is here, and ready to start getting the shackle reversal done, so I can get a rolling chassis again!!

got the front part of lift in yesterday also finished the gauge cluster

I drove mine to work for the first time! I haven't installed the top and it was in the 40's at 5:30 this morning so I froze a little, but it was worth it!

Over the weekend I finished building, painting and installing the spare tire carrier and I installed a new Kenwood HD stereo.

Be sure to post picts when you get it back:chug:

today I wished I had this hood ornament:D

Jeep is ready for the trip in de moutains of France next week :)

Back home from the Haute Alpes in France.
See my website www.thekick.nl for the pictures ( Pictures Jeep Events / 2010 September ….. Haute Alpes )

Not a havy trip, but verry nice to ride ...

I welded on the top side of the MORE frame reinforcement plates today. I'm going to flip the frame tomorrow and finish the bottom side. I'm also going to weld on the BTF XJ spring mount to the back tomorrow as well.

I have a couple of pictures so far. I'll post up all of them tomorrow when I'm done.

I called the police to report that some cock suckers stole my two week old rear license plate out front of Harbor Freight Tools in Independence Missouri at about 2:30pm while I was shopping for a tow strap. I'm 99% sure it was the homies in the scratched up gold ford minivan that was parked next to me when I went inside.
