GTO has a 428 in it. Original was 400. 455 wasn't available until 70

I took off a few pieces off of the front end. As I took off each piece, I was noticing how often I kept saying to myself, "I probably need a new or better one of these." My CJ7 front suspension.webp

That's basically everything. Hows the frame?

I was pleasantly surprised at how good the frame still was. This weekend, I'm thinking of looking at everything I should do while it's all apart. Maybe yj springs, high steer, new shocks and shackles. I'm taking the axle to ECGS for a pinion bearing replacement, so I'll have a bit of time to research what will be solid improvements. If anyone wants to add what they wish they did while everything was off, I'm listening to suggestions. Thanks.

Replace any and everything rubber or flexible.

Acquired a “Cab Cover” in hopes of using it while trailering. Going over/through the mountains with all the slush on the roads in the spring makes for a nasty interior/dash/inside of glass/etc. Always thought a cab cover sure would be nice.

Couldn’t find a cover that is rated as “towable”, but have seen a few people who have used them as such with an extra strap going across the lower windshield. Sounds like air gets underneath the cover there and pulls it off/causes issues.

So, I found a good cover online with lots of hold down straps. I added some grommets to the lower front edge and will slip a strap/rope through them and cinch it down. Will see how it works if I keep it under 75mph.

I have one like that I forget what brand it's very heavy with multiple tie downs. I've never towed with it though

I can see where that would be a great idea. I was thinking if I ever towed mine it would probably have the full top on.

I’m hoping to get back onto the bodywork soon. I feel like I’ve been neglecting the jeep!
Well depending on where in NY you are you're probably still digging out

Mostly today I worked on my 58 FC-170 removing the exhaust and intake manifold(s). But this morning I removed the steering column from my 73 CJ5 to investigate the horn wiring and the connection from the turn signal switch. I also got the light switch out of the dash. Yesterday I cleaned the inside of the air filter housing, ordered the breather hose that connects it to the valve cover, installed a new oil filter (oil was done a couple days ago), set the timing (electronic ignition), and installed new plugs and wires, It runs way better than when I bought it a week or so ago. The other day I disassembled the Sparton turn signal switch. I am very familiar with them after restoring the one in my FC not long ago. They are really cool how they cancel, easy to clean up and replace wires if necessary, etc. I was surprised that the one in the CJ had no internal light though. The one on my FC has a light that blinks when the signal blinks. The turn signal switch work led me into the steering column because it has a separate wire that goes to an electrical connection made through a square opening in the bottom of the column housing (the yellowed plastic thing with the two holes for mounting screws). It connects electrically via a tab on its connection side, which contacts a brass collar around the steering column itself. The brass collar has an electrical wire soldered to it which connects it to the horn button.

You need to get rid of that fire hazard of a plastic fuel filter above your exhaust manifold. I cringe Everytime I see one

Yes, Manic Mechanic, excellent point. I will. It is there only temporarily as I did not have a steel one. Actually I am going to completely re-do the fuel line so that it doesn’t go over the top of the engine at all in the not too distant future. Same for the hard vacuum line. Both look really clunky to me going over the valve cover like that, not to mention the fire hazard you so correctly point out. I just need to make the lines and replace the existing ones. I just bought the Jeep a week or so ago, and I have barely started in on it. I have a 58 FC that I am trying to clean up and it is taking a great deal of my time at present. But I love the CJ and so far it is a blast to mess with. Thank you for pointing out the fuel filter situation.

I removed, disassembled, and cleaned the Sparton turn signal switch. This 73 CJ-5 is new to me as of about a week ago. It needed a tune-up and timing very badly so I did that over the last couple of days. I also removed the steering column because the horn button isn’t good (well, the whole wheel isn’t good) and I wanted to inspect the horn wiring connection which actually runs down the turn signal switch wire sleeve. I’ll have pictures of the cleaned up turn signal switch tomorrow. Cheers!
