Long time lurker, first time poster. I picked up an 83 CJ7 last month with a AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l , T-176 and Dana 300 . The motor was already pulled and just needs to be put back together (already magnifluxed, decked, heads gone through, etc) which I was planning to do until I pulled up next to a Renegade with a loping v8 and outside the frame pipes. I’m sure you know where this is going...

I came across this rebuilt SBC today and from my research it looks like a late 90’s production Vortec 5.7 that was bored to 360ci. Problem is I’ve never bought a SBC so don’t know if it’s a good deal or not and by time I do all my research it’ll likely be gone. So before I decide to jump in I figured I’d run it by you guys.

Looks like The bigger items I’ll need (that’s not included) are accessory bracket/serp kit, water pump, radiator hoses, bell housing, clutch, throw out, headers (just bc I want side exit) lol. Carb isn’t included but I’ll put my Fitech system on it along with my HD alternator. I’ll need to get a tranny adapter. Already have an alloy radiator with electric fans. What am I missing?
He’s asking $2300 but I could probably knock a couple hundred off that

Would you do it? appreciate the input!

decent motor. older than 90s though as they went away from distributor style and weren't 4 bolt main but that's better for you.

You will need a lot more than the engine to get rolling. But that seems like a really great start on a fun ride. I went really old school, and found a 1969 AMC 343 (thought I'd bought the AMC 304 ). I was trying to decide whether to rebuild my I6 AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l because it was a better choice than the AMC 304 UNTIL I cleaned the engine and found that upside down 343 on the engine. Like you, I've decided to have the fun of a small block V8 that can be upgraded. Saw an engine like you found for $3k locally, about 60 miles away from my house. But I've already purchased the Advanced Adapter to mate the Ford T-18 tranny to my Dana 300 . Lots more goin' on with Edelbrock 7531 RPM intake manifold, Edelbrock 1406 4bbl carburetor, headers, etc. Mine has been a slow moving project, collecting a part here and a part there for ten years. Guarantee it won't be slow moving when I get it all assembled and running!

That’s a decent price if all fresh and a solid building point. not a crazy deal, but not over priced either. Lots of info for sbc conversions, but lots of small things add up. But again, it’s a V8 in a CJ!
